M cars are no longer the rare beasts they once were. Look at the number of E 46 M3s on the road today.
In reflection, some would say these must be the best M cars, ie sales volume and popularity. It would be hard to argue these cars capability. But IMHO my favourite M cars are the discreet ones, ie E28 M5, E34 M5 (especially the touring), E36 M3 Saloon, E39 M5.
No one can ignore the brilliance of the latest M5. But I just wish it wasn't so overloaded with technology. The earlier cars had that raw edge that is lacking in so many modern performance cars (E30 M3 being the most extreme) but from a marketing point of view, these cars made little sense.
Maybe we should be thankful that BMW still make great cars, albeit for the masses, but we still have the choice of the older IMHO more interesting cars.

E30 M3 .... owned and unfortunately sold a very good example. Since had 2 x e36 m3s and it was nowhere near as much fun

E21 3 series. Nice. Weren't these raced in the US?

Edited to add, BMW did some really cracking 'Art' cars. I think Andy Warhol painted a 6 series (though I could be wrong). Have they done any recently?

Of course there is always this too:

A fantastic collection. I have seen most of them up close at Mobile Tradition in Munich, unfortunately no pics allowed.

It's such a gorgeous car, and I like Loach am jealous, I'm even more jealous you have a Z8! pictures would be nice.

Funny enough, I have just been offered an e28 M535i. I know it's just a 535i with some tarty bits on it, but it's a one owner car, diamond black, shadowline trim and a manual gearbox, it's very clean and I have pestering the owner to sell it to me for more than a year now.
Typically though I am out of the UK until at least July.

Go figure eh?

That sounds very nice, I have a huge soft spot for M535i's and love the 80's kit. Black, 1 owner, nice. Don't see many of those anymore, not like that anyway. Sods law Bob. How much is it going for?

He only wants 1800 quid for it.

I'm toying with getting my sister to buy it and stick it in her garage. I have always wanted an M535i, this one even has the sports front seats. It's a car I could really go to town on, I get picky and have to make them perfect!

You are right. I don't really want to miss out on it! I've just texted my sister telling her to go round and have a chat with them for me.

I think the mileage is around 100k, and as far as I know it has been well looked after, they only use it occasionally, I think thats the reason they are selling.
