A late E39 M5 or an early E90 M3

Congrats, they really are amazing cars but its worth doing the muffler delete or fitting a decent exhaust.
No, please don't! When you buy an E39 M5 you're buying a wolf in sheep's clothing. Just keep it that way.If you want to announce your arrival before you arrive, buy a Porsche or, worse still, a Ferrari or Maserati.
When I was looking to buy an E39 M5 I went to look at one that was for sale and as we walked towards the car the owner said..."I've spent £2,000 on the exhaust. It sounds like a Ferrari!" I walked away.

I agree but its such an amazing engine is deserves to be opened up a little. When I carried out the muffler delete it was such an improvement but only when you gave it the beans (I now own a noisy TVR, you can never have enough noise) If you want to announce your arrival before you arrive, buy a Porsche or, worse still, a Ferrari or Maserati.

As an owner, it could do with more noise. We're not talking an exhaust that's noisy all the time here.
Having heard a friend's E39 with an Eisenmann Sport, it would nearly put me off a car for sale if it didn't have one installed! They make quite a nice sound on an E34 3.8 too. Fairly unobtrusive most of the time, but with all windows down and given a bit of stick it makes a glorious sound

Yes, the Eisenmann Sport on my E39 made exactly the right noise. Perfect addition to the all-time great E39.They make quite a nice sound on an E34 3.8 too. Fairly unobtrusive most of the time, but with all windows down and given a bit of stick it makes a glorious sound

Also looking at the Audi A5 4,2 but it somehow does not have the same appeal as a proper facelifted e39.
Oh, don't go for a Audi A5 4.2 (S5) if you enjoy driving. The feel of driving the Audi is totally numb compared to an E39 M5. I'm pretty sure that the A5/S5 is beautifully built/crafted and its all weather pace is undoubtedly faster than the M5 but there is nothing to get excited about the drive.
