I'm looking for an E46 M3 but it's proving difficult to find a suitable car. I'm loath to up my budget because in back of my head I want £2k set aside as a just in case fund.

I've just never got the thinking behind a convertible M3.
Agree.. I don't get the point of diesel convertibles either.

..an e46 m3 touring on the other hand would have been nice.

No doubt it's what the market wanted. The rest of the early e46 range must have sold well in convertible form, so why not the M3?

Mine is a coupe, which I personally prefer, but I get the appeal of the convertible (even though the two people I know who have owned them are out and out posers). wink

a fast 'vert with interesting engine seems a good idea to me, not everyone's choice I agree

someone where I used to work had one some years back - he'd px'ed it from a Z3M Coupe (always kept the miles low on it)
guess he might be regretting that considering their price now!

My friend maybe selling his car -
2003 prefacelift manual coupe with 72k miles in silver with black leather.
FSH.
Spec - almost fully loaded- Nav, HK, heated seats, sunroof etc. I believe he is after around £12500. Drives great, has had subframe inspection at reputable specialist and given all clear. PM if interested.

What's your budget? I'm debating selling mine! I love the car, but I am also debating going to a cheaper shed runaround.

I may come to regret this decision if history is anything to go by.

Best way to enjoy the noise, more of the time. I'm never going to be driving it so hard that the lack of rigidity and extra weight makes much difference.

And when not going fast, its nice to have a convertible to enjoy good weather.

Sadly, I may be looking to sell my 2002 manual coupe too, as circumstances (house etc) dictates a more sensible daily for the next 12 months.

Why so soon? It's a shame as it looked like you were getting into the car too.

I must admit. I debate selling up some days and am at the moment. Part of it is down to the sheer expense of running it, the worries about reliability etc.

Then I drive it. All is forgotten. And I'm not silly ; not many moderns these days are completely hassle free or cheap to run. It really has to be the best car I've owned for doing so so many things. Even after driving an M4 Manual on the weekend I'm quite happy with the M3 smile.

It's true, I was getting into it after all of its hidden expenses, but I need to don my sensible trousers for 6 months or so whilst the ex family home goes up for sale & all that this entails!

It's also true to say that I hadn't completely bonded with the car & so the rational has outweighed the emotional decision on this occasion!

After a short ownership I sold my E46 M3, now I have time to sit back and chew over what to purchase next. Wife must want to drive it, she flatly refused to drive the M3!!
Must say I miss the M3 much more than I imagined, especially after such a short ownership and I didn't feel I had bonded with the car.
Might go for a Focus ST, can't justify a RS, the focus wifey is happy to drive and it offers some old road performance that can be easily accessed. Cost around half the money to run one as opposed to a M3, but it cannot really compare and I find myself looking at M3 for sale ad's!!!!!

Surely the M3 is almost as easy to drive as the Focus ST. I must admit the Straight 5 warble is cool.

The issue however is that the M3 as you say is not a cheap car to run despite the relatively cheap buying price.

Certainly from a driving pov I agree that any 3 series is not far removed to a st, size size and more. Twice the cost to run a E46 M3 but will likely increase in value. Terms of perceived value I would say the BMWhas it by a country mile, the ford badge and mass manufacture of the st sees it as just a fast ford, albeit a good one.

For owners on the E46 M3 can you confirm what Roma is 70mph in 3rd gear? I've a sneaking suspicion that you'll only ever to be able to access max power in 1st and 2nd. Actually even if you risk it in 3rd the remaining 3gears you will not get the benefit /would be interesting to know the max power you can achieve in 4th.

Nipping down to 1st for the extra acceleration.

Some dreamers out there selling M3's. Just seen a 120k silver car with a cracked boot floor and all 4 wheels needing refurbishing advertised. Just short of £8k. Always makes me wonder who would buy a car like that?

I had a five pot Focus ST a few years ago. Nice drive, and it had plenty of accessible oomph, especially after the Bluefin stage 1 remap (which it should have had from the factory IMO).

I got bored after a year's ownership though and got rid. I missed n/a power delivery and have never owned a turbo'd car since.
