Nope. Far east. Recently moved out here. Food and houses are cheaper (generally), but with an equally low wage to match.

A £25k a year IT job in the UK would be around £4k here doing the same job frown

But apart from sky high car prices and tax, I am happy. Very laid back, nice ladies here too

Yes it is indeed, but only if you earn in £ Sterling.

Eg A waiter on Min wage in UK around £5.25 per hour, so before tax, you can buy around 5 litres of fuel for an hours work

A waiter here would get RM3.00 per hour, 1 litre of fuel is RM1.90, so the waiter cant even buy 2 litres of fuel after 1 hours work

To everyone back in the UK tho, RM1.90 per litre equals £0.30 per litre !! Nice if you're earning £ Sterling. (Too bad I cant ship some fuel back to you boys/girls)

However, cars are a diff story eg, used 2005 E60 M5 £105,000 then tax at £1745, 2002 E46 M3 £45,000 then tax at £510, so even tho I pay £0.30/litre for fuel, I would pay around £50k more for an E60 M5, or £25k more for an E46 M3. Or you could buy a brand new X5 4.8i for £140,000

Both places have their pros and cons smile

Can someone clear this for me then please;
My e39 ///M5 is a Y plate, but car is an import
I have the full spec and build sheet from BMW which states the Date of First Registration as 16/01/01 yet DVLA have date of first registration as 20/03/01
Which date is correct ?
The original owner travelled to Germany and drove car back

I would say the DVLA registration will be the one they use - naturally. So it looks as though Mr Darling will be raping you too...

I wouldn't worry too much about the £250 differential in VED that's about to shaft such ownership scenarios.

You'll be taking it up the chuff in so many other ways once you own one of these things.

1624 : Mr Darling says the new vehicle excise duty bands will be phased in. The maximum increase next year will be £5.

I have just had a look at the car tax rules website www.direct.gov.uk

I still think that the higher rate of tax is only applicable for cars registered on or after 23/03/2006 (two thousand and six)

Can someone please double check for me ?
Sorry, wrong.

Any car registered after 31st March 2001 will attract the higher rates e.g. if you have an April 2001 M5 then it's £445 a year.

Definitive.
Err, sorry, but I believe I am correct.
Take another look at the updated cartax site - when the 13 new bands come into force ALL cars that were registerd BEFORE 23 March 2006 will stay in band K

Yes but that is post the November u-turn so things have changed again, it was a correct statement when it was made, it was set to rise to that for post Mar 2001 cars.

Did you take a look at the cartax site ?

There was a pre-budget reform as of 24th November 2008 regarding car tax !

Yes I did, you are talking about the u-turn in November, the same one I mentioned myself in my post. Your original comment however and Soovy's response were made many months ago no? Hence I am pointing out that at the time he corrected you he was indeed .. er.. correct, it's only now and due to recent changes that yes your car will cap at band K.

If you read the whole of the thread at no point did I accept a "correction" - infact I even questioned the whole farce all the way through !

I had seen ages ago that it was only the cars registered from 23/3/06 that would see their tax bands changed, but this then dissappeared from the cartax site for a while, but as I posted that it would be unlikely for a Government to change taxes retrospectively I am just pleased that they have stuck with it !

(not setting out for a tit-for-tat discussion here)
