Yes I heard that too... Look at the new MINI it has a huge gap. BMW wouldn't have purposely designed something with the intention of it costing its customers less.EU bullst.

It really boggles my mind, the M135i has a somewhat similar engine but sounds quite decent even though it is all synthetic. I don’t understand how the sound engineers botched the car where sound is arguably most important so badly. Even the i8 3-pot sounds worlds better than the M3/M4.
A part of my hopes there will be a software-update that changes the engine sound completely. Maybe for the facelift. The engine itself is still a beast.
Regarding sounds, the F10 M5 gets stick occasionally but a lot of owners do seem to say it's unfair and it does actually still sound rather good.
With the M3/M4 though, a lot of owners do seem to be repeating what you've just said, unfortunately. I've yet to hear one for myself but my mate at the local dealers says much the same about the noise.

Yes, a quick software update for the augmentation and an aftermarket exhaust would be all thats needed to quash this flaw. What kind of an engineer would say that? If you want a "proper" sports car, you don't build it from a saloon to begin with. The reason M cars are desirable to the public is that they are a) expensive b) offer decent but compromised performance and comfort in once package. I can't think of one that isn't built around this ethos. To quote a M engineer over in Munich

It really is bad...on Monday when we were selling it back to the dealer, the missus went out and started it in the morning and I just thought to myself 'thank goodness that's going today, I won't have to hear 'that' anymore'. A couple of my neighbours, who know very little about cars have also commented on whether it's 'right'. Quick chat with the salesman, handed me the keys, started her up from cold...

Did you try it in different modes? Apparently in sports+ the exhaust sounds much better than in eco mode. I am wanting to arrange a test drive for myself but the dealer will only give me a 30 min slot and I feel I am going to need a full day before I commit, as sound is important to me. Just because a performance car is based on a saloon / estate / whatever the trendy name for a hatchback is these days doesn't mean that it has to be the polar opposite from a lightweight sports car. The engineer probably meant that he'd rather build something with just enough practicality and "compromise" to be useful as a daily driver yet focussed enough to entertain.Or you could just give up and throw more power at a Golf.
