E39 M5 oil temp and coolant temp off the scale
Discussion
I have had several quotes from BMW specialists all have been within £50 of £700 looks like the going rate me thinks. Thanks for your info mate . After the works done I'm thinking of selling the car or px for a E60 M5 I've seen a couple on pistonheads just need to view them . If anyone is interested drop us a email and we can take it from there. I will be going through pistonheads advertising site soon .

Is this price for Thermostat & sensor replacement ? If so those prices are way over the top, you don't need a specialist to change the thermostat. When my E39 M5 had the same problem i bought a new stat, plenty of rubber o rings, sensor & coolant which came to about £130 from memory. Took it to my mates garage as i had heard that you can have issues with o rings splitting/getting damaged. We did it together in about an hour, it leaked 1st time when started up as an o ring had got snagged & wasn't sealing so we removed stat again & got it right 2nd time. I think i gave him about £30 or 40can't quite remember but it wasn't a hard or long job. Would think it should cost you around £200 including parts, its not a hard job. Thanks FatmansV8

No the price includes cam cover gasket's to Simon .I'm a firm believer in warranties for precisely the problem you had after the first fitting. My luck is such I need a warranty. How is the the E60 I'm going to Wigan to have a look at one probably next Saturday.
Thanks

The E60 M5 is a different beast to the E39 M5, as good as the E39 M5 is and i had mine for almost 5 yrs i prefer the E60 M5. Make sure you look at some nice ones don't be tempted by cheaper higher mileage ones. Try to get one thats already had clutch/flywheel replaced & is already covered under BMW AUC or BMW Mondial warranty & some of the options like active front seats & the full 5k leather option is nice to have (leather dash etc). They are a fair bit quicker than the E39 once you start using the revs but can feel lacking at low revs around town. Front/ rear discs & pads are about £2k fitted at dealer so factor that in when looking at one. Tyres are more expensive than E39 almost a grand for a set of Continentals & don't forget car tax is £490 a year after March 06. Go through the Idrive to check servicing what needs doing when. Most seem to have at least 4 or 5 owners don't let that put you off. Thanks
