Having been lucky enough to have been in on very early examples of quite a few nice cars recently and chatted about them on the various forums on PHs I have to say that the M3 forum stands out as the only one where rather than discussing the car people go on and on about depreciation to the exclusion of virtually anything else about the car. Why is this. Interestingly it seems to be mainly non owners that do this. Must confess I find it very odd.
Pugsey, I've already said that I think you've been very decent in the face of all this negativity about your new toy.

I've summed up the feelings of many before, but perhaps they are worth re-stating.

We looked forward with eager anticipation to the launch of the new M3.

We'd been on the waiting list for years.

We'd wrongly assumed the car was going to be £45k for a basic spec, £50k for bells & whistles.

We'd expected mind-blowing reviews.

What we've actualy got is a car priced at a level that is a stretch for many of us unless residuals are caste-iron, and the reviews that are luke-warm.

Nett result is that we're all dubious about the car and its price and looking for reinforcement of our views via heavy initial depreciation.

Then we can buy one! smile
I see your point but agree with Pugsey about the topic on the new M3.
When I try to open the debate about the real qualities/pitfalls of the car, the answers are only from him or send me to other topics I do not find.
What about car control in the wet, explonation about various mode of edc, influence from experience about power button???

any other forum my comment - clearly made in the context of the roll I use the car for btw - would lead to discussions about the car itself. On here it just leads (according to you) to a lot of twittering about depreciation. From mainly non owners who are unlikely to be effected anyway. Odd.
Owners ... blah .. own ... blah blah ...

I read AE long term view on theirs earlier - they seem to describe the car as unremarkable.

See what I'm getting at here ? Or do you need to own one to have an opinion ?

The car being not good has an impact on values (not price).

Simon (non owner)
You've missed my point (I think) mate. Of course everyone and his brother is entitled to an opinion and that's great and absolutely as it should be. But WHY is it all about depreciation again and again and again. Why doessn't anyone talk about the handling, grip, steering, noise, gismos, comparisons with E46 etc.etc. This is what happens under all the other marque headings I visit on PHs. Are there no DRIVING enthusiasts on here - just bankers maybe? My comment re non owners was because as the one group that WON'T suffer whatever depreciation goes with this car why do they care so much. Anyone want to discuss the car itself? Any petrol in anyones veins?! With a very few exceptions you really are a boring lot and I may well take my ball and go off to play with the Ferrari/Aston/Porker lads.

So there.

I've got an E46 convertible, had it over 3 years and love it. Spent the last 2 months looking to replace it...

S5 - nice interior, couldn't hear the engine, hit the rev limiter pulling off - very short first gear and not enough high end RPM
335d - very capable
911 c2s - missus wants 4 proper seats. Biggest problem £56k for a car nearly 3 years old
E92, good spec and costs less than the used 911c2s. Got 4 proper seats, more room than the E46. V8 reminds me of the chimaera I used to own, great sound. Like the high note of the E46 but the V8 does it for me. It feels right and it will keep up with c2s. Gorgeous looking too!

911 expected to be worth £28k in 3 years, I suspect the E92 will be worth a tad more. So, the depreciation is pretty much the same as any other car for this kind of money. Seems a no brainer to me - will be ordering the E92 in the morning!

I appreciate your comment and share most of them.
Regrading order, I will do the same as soon (?) as my home is sell (new one already purchased).
I just wonder if it makes sense to wait for the DSG?
