My New Toy - M2 Competition
Discussion
As the title suggests, I thought I would start a thread about my latest purchase.
Having had both an E46 and an E90 M3 over the last ten years and, more recently, an M135i which my wife uses, I had been looking at getting back into a proper M car and as good as the latest M3 and M4 are, they are a bit too big for my liking, so the smaller M2 Competition just fitted the bill.
I have always had a liking for blue cars but when I saw this one in Hockenheim Silver with the additional carbon bits and pieces fitted by the current owner, I thought it just looked the perfect combination. He had the roof wrapped in carbon and the front splitter and side sills fitted. Together with the rear diffuser and the M Performance exhaust tips. You cannot currently buy an M Performance exhaust for the car so the lack of sound may have to be addressed at a later date.
He had also had the front bumper and sills covered with PPF and also the rear bumper top, but I decided to have the front wings, bonnet, mirrors and A pillars covered as well to protect the most vulnerable areas. The company I used in Sheffield also extended the stone guards on the rear arches for a bit of extra protection. They did a fantastic job (not sure if I’m allowed to name the company who did the work but if you’re interested, just PM me).
I had looked at another car a few years ago at the same company who are based near Selby and this particular M2 was the personal car of one of the owners. Having been a run in the car and talked to the guy, I could tell he was as anal as me about how to look after your pride and joy, so I had no hesitation in buying it.
What with the horrendous weather and work commitments, the opportunities to drive the car have been very limited, so I’ll keep updating the thread as the weeks/months go on with more photos and driving impressions.

Nice. Like that a lot, looks great in that colour.
How does it compare to the M135i?
Initial thoughts are that it feels a lot tighter in terms of body control than the M135i and the DCT is obviously quicker than the 8 speed ZF.How does it compare to the M135i?
As I said, I haven't had an opportunity to have a proper drive on some decent dry roads yet, so I 'll update my impressions once I've done a few more miles in it.
We have had the M135i for just over 4 years and it is a cracking car for the money and very underrated. My eldest son has a 2007 130i and he loves that as well; they are just great cars.

Thanks for that. I have an M140i which I’ve had for 6 months and love so far. The M2 seems like the obvious next step on day. As I said, I haven't had an opportunity to have a proper drive on some decent dry roads yet, so I 'll update my impressions once I've done a few more miles in it.

I’ve read others saying that it’s too firm too be a daily or that the DCT doesn’t work in those circumstances. I drove my uncles M3 with a DCT a bit and it seemed to do the boring stuff just fine so hopefully I won’t find them too firm.
Lovely example you’ve bought. I did the move from a 65 plate M135i to the M2C circa 3 months ago. It’s a case of everything being turned up a few notches tho the biggest difference I’ve found so far is the handling. It provides a confidence factor where the M135i started to run out of ideas. Although a lot is often spoke about the engine & it is mighty I still rate the little M135i for its combination of punch, economy & noise. One area I do have to show a shallow side on: I can’t help look back at the M2C every time I park it up, those arches just make it a visual feast. Gearbox wise I had the ZF8 & now have the DCT. The latter is quicker / punchier when on it but the former silky smooth so you takes your choices. Overall I’m pleased with the purchase but it’s still early days and I can feel a carbon bit or two being purchased! Cheers, Kevin.

I'm in a similar position (ex e92 M3 owner and my old m140 is now with the wife) and would agree 100% with your thoughts on the car.
Picked up an M2C a week ago. Loving it even though only driving sedately so far due to running-in and cold/wet roads.
Interesting that you went for the original M2 wheels. I have to say that I think they look much better than the actual competition wheels which come as standard. Was that an option when you spec'd yours?Picked up an M2C a week ago. Loving it even though only driving sedately so far due to running-in and cold/wet roads.

The cross spokes are far too fussy IMO. I can't stand diamond cut wheels either.
If cross spokes were the only choice I'd be painting them black, but as a preference I'd also choose the original wheels or go aftermarket.
Problem with black wheels is that they disappear in the arches. But yes, definitely a personal thing - I kinda like the Comp wheels. If cross spokes were the only choice I'd be painting them black, but as a preference I'd also choose the original wheels or go aftermarket.

Yes, it is a cost-free option. I saw the option in the brochure as it wasn't obvious on the configurator.Prefer the look, easier to clean and lighter.

I agree. I think I prefer the normal M2 wheels because the comp ones are a bit fussy for me and I bet they’re a pig to clean! If cross spokes were the only choice I'd be painting them black, but as a preference I'd also choose the original wheels or go aftermarket.
Fantastic looking car, enjoy
Regarding the noise, there's not a huge amount you can do about it, I initially just went with a Eisenmann backbox but due to the OPF's (filters in between the cat and muffler) it was still too quiet for my tastes. I eventually went with a full straight through system to get the noise I wanted and now I'm happy.
Have fun driving and I hope the running in period isn't too painful
