A few questions here for the experts and current M4 owners.

I’m on a rollercoaster with this car buying business but I keep getting drawn to the M4. I rang up my dealer and told the salesman I really want a M4 with my budget, he said come in for a drive so I did.

I told him my budget is around 450-550 a month with whatever equity I have in my 4 series minus the seperate loan I have, going by autotrader, my 430d is worth around 20k and I owe 9 k so let’s say a 10k deposit.

He said sure, I’ll pass the details of your car to my business manager along with your budget, he didn’t seem phased over my budget.

The car is a M4 LCI (67 reg) DCT in Yas Marina Blue, HUD, HK, privacy glass and 360 camera with black leather on 8500 miles.

We get back from the drive, he offers 15 grand for my car so 5800 deposit and 670 a month with 8k per annum at 12%!! Barely open to negotiation.

This is where it gets interesting, I tried finding the car in question on AT and it turns out I saved it 32 weeks ago, it’s been on sale for over 6 months, the car is immaculate, not sure why it’s not selling, it’s reg starts with Y so it’s a BMW UK car, could it be a press car? Is the spec poor, because I think it’s a decent spec!

As for the drive, wow what a machine, absolute rocket and it rode a lot better than the Competition pack I drove last year, didn’t feel any slower. The only difference was the exhaust note which I think is better on the non competition, the comp pack popped and crackled a lot, it was a lot louder and while that is a laugh, it might be a bit too much when driving through high streets, everyone turning their heads and OAP’s shaking their heads when because it looks like you’re speeding.

Anyways, I emailed him after saying I realised the car has been on sale for longer than 6 months and his figures are way over my budget so I offered him 35k, 19 for my car and/or lower the interest to 6%, I said if you can get near to any of those, let me know otherwise I’m going to have to wait until they drop down some more.

I could get a pre facelift one, a tidy one in fact but I want something with atleast 2 years warranty and from a proper reputable dealer!

My question is, why hasn’t it sold and is my offer ridiculous?

Are you sure it hasn’t sold and been bought back ? Buyer may not have liked car , or worse a problem. Check HPI for any change of owners in that period. I’d want to check dealer records for any problems in that period. In case it’s a lemon.
Otherwise , maybe it’s one of those things , it was overlooked.
Is the Autotrader ad dates 32 weeks ago or can you save the car even if is renewed.
I don’t think it’s been on and off for sale, it’s the same advert with saved 32 weeks ago under it, I always save random cars when I’m procrastinating and I’m surprised it’s still there, usually the S65’s and CL600’s are still for sale hehe

I bought my F80 M3 2 years ago BMWAUC and got 7% APR without even trying much. I put 11500 in on a 45k car that had 9,300 miles and it was £491 a month. I managed to pay the whole car off including balloon within 18 months by overpaying lumps as I tend to keep my cars for a while. Don’t pay more than 7% and even that will cost you a fortune in interest if you go the full term.

They are great cars. Move on and look at another M4 if the deal doesn’t suit. I’d been looking for a year as I wanted a very very high spec car in Sakhir or Yas marina. Once I found what i was looking for I test drove it the day after it came in and didn’t haggle price as one in that spec wouldn’t come up again for a long time, mine has everything except TV that was available at the time, never seen another with as much spec.
Thanks for the info, he responded quite quickly saying he’s going to try work something out, how did it work with you paying it sooner, is the interest not fixed etc? My worry is the annual mileage and GFV being effected.

Did you give an offer in your car?

I doubt you will get much movement in your PX and you wouldnt get an increased value on your PX and a decrease on the sales price.
You mentioned 35k offer but not what its up for. For a car thats been up for sale for 6 months id be tempted to offer 5k below asking and work from there. Depends how much you want the car then settle at 4-3.5k less than asking.
Apologies, it’s up for 40 k

How much did the mileage change in the intervening 32 weeks?
Not a lot, probably 2-400 miles, can’t remember exactly.

It’s a lovely car and spec, went to see it again today as I left my drivers licence with the salesman, I’m in love with it!

I've been looking at M4's recently and I spotted that too. It seems a decent deal and I've been thinking of enquiring to see if they'd do that deal on a manual...because the DCT doesn't do anything for me.
Thanks for the link!

That looks like a good deal for a short term thrill, brand new CP with a low deposit so easy to get into but it’s still 56k total without HK, HUD or reversing camera etc.

I want to comfortably afford an M4 knowing I’ll own it at the end or have better equity. If only the monthlies started with a 4 with a better spec, might be tempted, better spec = better residuals.

If I see an M4 without HK or HUD, I ain’t interested!

Don't want to disappoint you but looking at the headlights, its not an LCI car. Some later registered cars may have earlier build dates that weren't LCI so ask for the build date. I *think* later 2017 build dates were LCI.
It’s definitely an LCI, has the LCI rear lights with the new touchscreen idrive, it was built Oct 2017.

I actually don’t mind the pre LCI astetically because there are a few 2017 ones but my concerns are with the drivetrain/DCT, I’ve read a lot about pre lci being easily upset with the slightest imperfection on the road and being snappy. I also have a 65 plate 4 series now so would like the updated idrive where you can have Apple car play retrofitted at a small cost.

I’d guess it’s hanging about as it’s not a Comp Pack, rightly or wrongly it’s what most people want.
Correct it is but minus the wheels and the better seats, the only difference that I’ll be able to tell between the 2 is the firmer ride and louder exhausts, both arguably make the car worse as a daily driver.

I had a thorough look through the whole of the UK’s BMW approved used stock on the main BMW website and actually found many CP’s with a few k miles extra for the same price.

There’s also a lot of convertibles hanging around for less than 40 but all come without HK which rule them out for me completely.

The salesman got back to me saying he can’t do 35 but he’ll keep an eye out for M4’s within my budget, in the mean time I might put mine up for sale so I’ll be ready to buy one immediately should they come up.

Anybody want a 430d? hehe

Had a really bad experience buying an ex BMW F10 M5 CP, only 3k mileage and 9 months old, it was so bad it was dangerous needing amongst other things 2 new wheel bearings and had presumably spent all of it's 3k miles being ragged to death on a track somewhere. I rejected it and after a bit of hassle got my money back. I wouldn't go anywhere near an M car now that had belonged to BMW, usually start with YJ or YK.

You really have to look far and wide for one and be prepared to spend several weeks or months looking, don't limit yourself to local dealers who think they have you over a barrel, that's the beauty of the internet. I know it's difficult at times when you see one and it looks so nice, but you need to stick to your guns and eventually you'll find one that ticks all your boxes, and you won't regret it.
Thanks for that, it’s interesting you mention BMW UK cars specifically as they’re always usually the cheapest with the lowest mileage, there are hardly any other cars beginning with H (Coopers reg) anywhere near 40k when a year old unless they’ve done 20k + miles.

My current BMW actually starts with YJ and it was an ex company car for BMW UK, the name on the logbook was a female name, maybe an accountant, definitely took it easy as the rear tyres looked new.

The annoying thing is that BMW UK cars are always well specced with low mileage and cheaper. I’ll just wait as you said, don’t want to make a 40k mistake !

Ahh, looks like the M3 had a different LCI date then as the rounded inner headlights are are deffo pre-LCI on the M3.

Edited by stabilio on Wednesday 10th April 10:16
M3 had it's first LCI for the 2016 MY the M4 got all the internal upgrades (new ECU software and the rear dampers from the CP) as well but not the visual ones (rear lights being an obvious example) they then had MY updates through 2017 and 18 and also an LCI for the 4 series including the M4 at the same time the M3 got the same treatment as the M4 (iconic lights) but already had the rear light treatment back in MY16.

In short excluding the MY updates the M3 has had two visual LCI and the M4 one but both have had the same mechanical and SW changes at the same time.
Another strange thing about the M3’s is that 2016 onwards ‘LCI’ M3’s come with the pre facelift front lights where the M sport’s had the full facelift LED’s as standard. The LCI 2 for the M3’s come with the LCI 4 series type lights where they’re slightly tinted inside with xenon bulbs and the full LED’s are an option. Strange !

OP why not just get a loan for the required amount from your bank at a much better rate?
Well that’s one of my options, I didn’t think of that as I thought a good deal was on the cards considering how long the car had been on sale. That is what I’m going to do, going to service my car and put 2 new year tyres on and put it up for sale and just wait until the right M4 comes up.

Funny thing is I just saw a BMW salesman fill up a brand new 330i in Cobham and I asked him straight up, 2017 + late M4 or M340i, his words? M340i, will be quicker when mapped and it’s 4 wheel drive.

For god sake is everything about 0-60 times and 4 wheel drive now?!

Just for clarification, I was referring to the upcoming G20 M340i.

A lot of cars will be quicker than the M4 once remapped but that isn’t what it’s about to me, the M4 I drove felt like it was a completely different car to my 4 series, from the gearbox to the spikey power delivery to the suspension and steering, it’s a purpose built car with a wider front/rear track. It’s a beast.

It’s the reason I keep going back to it, I’ve driven a few M140i’s, I’ve driven the M2 and even a new 4.0 C63, I don’t know what it is, but they all just felt like faster versions of my car, not much separated them.

I could save a lot of money, buy a 440i with the M power kit and be done with it but it just won’t be the real thing will it!

Exactly, if anything, to a person who isn’t very interested in cars or just wants a quick tool, they’d actually prefer the 340i/M340i as they’re very easy to drive unlike the M3/4’s which are not the type of cars you put in drive and mash the throttle.

My neighbour bought a very high spec m performance 440i with the exhaust and power kit, I said to him you could have bought an M4 for that money and he said the M4 was ‘too much’.

I recently picked up a 66-plate M4 CP at the end of March, after watching it drop by several £k over about a month. I was originally not looking for a comp-pack (thought it would be over-budget), but managed to bag a deal at the end of the quarter.

I too toyed with the idea of a 440i plus some mods, but eventually decided I'd always wish I'd got a proper M-car (something I'd always dreamed of owning!) if I compromised.
There are a few decent 66 plate’s in budget and it turns out that 2016 onwards they received the same updates the M3 LCI got but my issue is the warranty aspect, id want atleast a years worth of manufacturer warranty.

Extended warranty is fairly cheap but I intend to own for a few years and extending it every year along with the excess charges, it might get pricey.

I actually decided to start looking at M3’s and I cannot believe they’re more expensive, I mean I know they’re no longer in production but surely that doesn’t mean they command atleast 4k extra to the equivalent M4!

Edit:

As for the 440i idea, there are a few ex demo 440is with the power and sound kit all just above 30k with lots of options and I would have gone for one if I didn’t have a 430d.

Plus, I can’t imagine an M4 using more fuel than a 440i, my friends M240i returned 19 mpg and he has a heavy foot like myself.

The M4 is my dream, I’ve been spending atleast half an hour a day on Google and the classifieds trying to find the right deal and spec, I even searched up audio upgrade companies to upgrade the sound system on an M4 without the HK should I find a cheap one but it all just isn’t working.

I went into MB today and enquired about a C63 (yes I know I said I prefer the M4 but I thought I’ll see how they’re looking) and I was very surprised to find a C63 Premium with the AMG exhaust, 17 plate with the black wheels that are a 2500 option, the nice ones and a mileage of 7500k miles.

Price, 39,995 and the PCP offer they had for me? 5k deposit, 6.9%, 550 a month, 10k per annum with a GFV of 15k, which I said is impossible, old C55’s are like 10k now!

The interest is high but the residuals are very good and nearly cover it.

I’m very tempted, why couldn’t BMW offer better? The deal was something like 6k deposit and 685 a month with 8k per annum?!

What am I missing here?

For £40k, Was that a C63 saloon or coupe? I flirted with the idea of the C63 Coupe but with the spec I wanted they were a bit too expensive for me (ones I saw were at least mid-40s). Strangely, this is the opposite way round to m3s / m4s price-wise. I personally didn't like the look of the C63 saloon even though it was cheaper (no nice big rear arches like the m3!).

I got a low rate bank loan like xjay1337 mentioned. My experience is that If you work out the total 3 year cost, PCP will normally end up more expensive than a cheap loan (unless you can get a very low rate and large dealer contribution).
It was a saloon, lovely lovely car, saw it again yesterday and I am in love. I think it’s the noise and engine that makes up for it’s understated looks. The coupe is way out of my budget and it must be a premium as I need the Burmester. It’s a shame you can’t spec it by itself as I could live without the sunroof and a few other things.

I’d look to get a bank loan but 30k is a lot to borrow and I guess PCP is effectively the same thing but the term to repay the 30k would either have to be longer (more interest) or shorter with much higher monthlies. The residuals help on the C63, the slower depreciation could offset the interest costs. I could even ask to lower the yearly mileage to drop the monthlies as I won’t do that many but I’d rather have more equity in the car. Maybe my way of explaining it may seem dumb to the finance gurus on here, but I’d rather pay 5k and have 5 in my pocket and just pay the 550 a month instead of pay 10, get a massive 30k loan out and pay more a month. I’m not going to keep the car more than 2 years anyway.

I worked it out, with the deposit, the car will cost me 15k over 2 years, if I sell it for 25, which is almost a guarantee considering the spec and mileage, I can pay it off and walk away.

At the moment, I’ve lost 10k in 27 months on my 430d, I don’t mind paying an extra 2500 a year to drive a car I never thought I would drive 5 years ago.
