I think I am going potty, I have a 2006 M5 with 34k I purchased it 6 months ago, but have always moaned about an apparent drive "clonk" on initial take off or if in slow traffic, if I blipp the throttle in slow traffic you can feel a definate slack in the drive train almost like the rear axle is rocking. My main dealer has been great but admit they do not see many M5's to compare, they changed the rear prop coupling, but no change, I understand that the smg has bad press about sloppy changes etc, but once moving I have no concerns, on slow take off after the clonk I can have real bad clutch judder, is this connected? I live in Hertford, is there anybody localish that would be happy to meet up so that I could maybe compare with theirs so that I can once and for all to put this to bed

Morning Chris, Thanks for the offer but my dealer Elms of Stanstead (which incidentally have been great) have now decided to change the rear diff bushes and try this before they go the clutch/dual mass route, so I will let you know how it goes and then maybe meet up a try a swapsy drive

I have looked at the thread, one of the suggestions is to reset the SMG has anybody done this in the UK, I don't want to be the first to find out it is a wind up that locks the gearbox or something like that

Pork, It may well have been the car that your brother saw at Bedford as there are not many about in Imola, I have to say that the attention the car gets still makes me smile (normally from ear to ear) especialy if I have just polished it and am having a bit of a jolly in it, just to clear the cobwebs you understand. I am constantly being reminded how much my car has dropped in value, but I try to get them to realise lifes pleasures very rarely come cheap!! I hope your brother is as happy with his car as I am with mine.

Hi Chris, I thought it had made a difference, I'm sure it does not shudder so much on take off, but I have definately got some slack still in the drive to the point that when I select reverse and touch the throttle there is no response for a second...scary!! but not all the time, hope this helps mate, maybe when you have yours back we will make the time to meet up.

Chris, lets keep our fingers crossed,I am relaying all this to my contact at Elms because they are reluctant to remove gearbox without trying everything else first.Keep me posted, Thanks, John

Morning Chris, I'm jealous!! I have had a spark plug service now but my contact at Elms has left, so it means starting from scratch again, my problem if anything is getting worse in that I sometimes now have a delay when I shift from drive to reverse, maybe you can give me the details of your Elms and I can get Stanstad to talk to them or even take mine to them. Thanks, John
