I'm currently looking to buy a brand new Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea 116660 (rrp £7,070) and have been informed by the authorised dealer - a place where I've bought quite a few watches many of them Rolex, including a new SS Daytona - that they're not allowed to discount Rolex Sport models.

This despite it being widely acknowledged that there's a significant markup on such watches: http://www.quora.com/What-is-the-cost-of-a-Rolex-f...

Given that the SDDS hasn't been a massive success, are AD's allowed to discount?

When I was in the market for a 116610 Sub recently, I was told that none of the "special incentives" such as trade-ins, discounts for being members of associated clubs etc were valid on ANY Rolex sports models. To quote one of them, the can sell them without having to offer any sort of incentive, so they don't!

In the end, I went down the preowned route.

Other than the usual places - here, TZ, Watchfinder, Blowers, Chrono24 where did you search for your pre-owned Rolex ?

Am thinking about buying a "cheap" Explorer II - needs to be working and preferably with box and papers but I don't care about scratches / dinks as having seen a PVD'd Explorer on Heuerboys website - I really quite like it and it's something different that may actually tempt me into Rolex ownership !
Not everyone's taste I know - but I like the look of it.

having looked around, I eventually settled on Watchfinder and I wasn't disappointed with their customer service.
I traded in a couple of watches against the LV. I know I could have probably got more for them on E-Bay, but with the amount of scams that seem to surround selling "good" watches on there, I opted for the path of least resistance.
I was in the watchclub in Bond Street a few months ago, and despite them having a lot of the Rolex pro-hunter series (which doesn't do a lot for me to be frank), I felt their selling prices were high and their buying prices were insultingly low!

Rubbish, go to another dealer. There are loads of SDDS around and a discount can be had if you go in, act serious and tell them you're there to buy.

I think this is the casesmile

My approach would be to go in, try on the watch, make all the right noises, and then say "yep, I love it, I want to walk out of here with this on my wrist, what can you do to make that happensmile"

If they say NOTHING we can do....... Just say ok, that's a shame, I'll have to look elsewhere, and walk away....

Sooner or later, one of the AD's will want to make the sale...... Personaly I'd be inclined to go towards month end, when they need to get sales figures in...smile

Got to be worth a try on a watch of that pricesmile

They wont normally discount sport watches as they are too popular. You may be able to haggle extra years warranty etc.

Buy pre-owned for better value. Or use Tesco club card points at Ernest Jones.

You may get a Deep Sea discounted as they are not proving popular but are much better value secondhand.

Thanks for your reply. I really quite like the Prohunter series - each to their own of course - but I don't have Prohunter money.

Nope, went in looking at the SDDS a couple of month back, had the cash in my bag, but wanted something off, as it was not worth 7k to me.

The woman said as stated in other posts that they do not discount those models.

I'm glad TBH as I did not really like the watch, just had the urge to buy something.

I bought a new Sub Date a few weeks back and am very pleased I did, the aesthetics of the DS were poor IMO.

When I bought mine they said that they couldn't discount the watch but gave me staff friends and family discount for the necklace that my wife was buying at same time. Got me a few hundred off so happy days.

When I went into my local AD some years ago to buy a midsize TT Yachtmaster they would not discount at all from rrp.At the time the rrp was £4110 and I put £4k in cash on the table at one stage and they would not accept it.

In the end somebody I knew in the jewellery trade sourced one from another AD and got me a 20% discount.

I don't think people are trying hard enough.

10% is easily attainable.
