I see a lot of abbreviations and strange words used in watch circles. Can someone explain the following:

ETA
Complications
DPV (I think it was that)

Any other watch terms that I probably don't know and should?

ETA is a company - ETA SA Manufacture Horlogere Suisse, part of the Swatch Group - that manufacture watch movements, they produce most of the movements (either completed/finished or as a kit of parts) used by many watch makers in their mechanical (and quartz) watches. Only a few companies produce their own inhouse movements. The rest buy in movements from ETA or other third parties (e.g. Sellita, Seagull, Maktime, etc.). As I understand it ETA are planning to reduce the number of movements they sell unfinished to companies outside the Swatch Group. This is creating considerable uncertainty and concern.

Complications - this refers to a watch that does more than tell the time; e.g. the date is a complication, other complications include, day, chronograph, moonphase, alarm, etc..

DPV - no idea

I bet you really mean PVD. Physical Vapour Deposition is a technique used to enblackerate things like the Seiko Night Monster:



There's also at least one company that will take your Rolex Daytona and PVD it, thus ensuring that if it ever breaks, Rolex will refuse outright to service your £5K watch.

A hacking movement stops the second hand when you pull out the crown to set it.

A non-hacking movement doesn't.

GMT: Grenwich Mean Time - Greenwich is the place from where all time zones are measure

I Think it's either a watch with a second time zone function or one that has a 24 hour hand ( sometimes with time zones around the bezel ) so you can work out times in different time zones
