Just to clarify , what I mean about commodity watches is that they are completely mass-produced and the innards are no different between a £500 Tag and a £3000 Omega.

The alternative is a watch that has been handcrafted and is actually a piece of quality workmanship - you can appreciate the skills that went into making it. A movement made by Zenith or A.Lange & Sohne is something to be proud of, the Tags, Rolex's and Omegas are just trendy or showy - they are not manufactured by craftsmen.

Just look at the beauty in these watches for example :

As posted in an earlier thread, seems that Rolex is not as exclusive as people first think. Certainly in terms of how many are produced.

The watch I aspire to own is an IWC Big Pilots watch.

it does show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder though because to me those zeniths are over-styled and ugly!similiarly i don't like most patek phillipes for myself.

it's the kind of utilitarian design of divers watches, 'military' watches etc that attracts people to some 'brands'.. and the sort of 'classic' design that attracts people to others..

Had my explorer for 2 years and it’s never let me down. Great watch.

Now if you will excuse me, as it’s now 5.30pm I’m off to the pub…

I've always had a problem with Rolex and I could never quite put my finger on it. I thought it was the huge number of fakes (like tag) and then it dawned on me that I think they are all so shiny and...bland. There is no actual design to them IMO. It's just a bog standard watch face with a bog standard silver/gold strap sellotaped to it.
I just dont get it paperbag

I'm not a big an of Rolex's but then I do consider myself to have a bit of taste. A nice Zenith, IWC, A Lange & Sohne, Girard-Perregaux or Jaeger LaCoultre would be much nicer to own.

Tags and Omegas are just commodity watches that are ridiculously overpriced and marketed. A Seiko would be a better quailty watch.

As for diving, any proper diver wouldn't use a watch anyway these days, they have flash dive computers. (Or a decent Seiko)

The one person on this thread who actually knows what they are talking about.

Top end there are Breguet, Vacheron Constantin, Patek Phillipe and Audemars Piguet all of which can be bought secondhand for less than a nasty new chavvy Rolex would cost.
The only Rolex to have credibilty was the original (not the current) Daytona, mainly because it had a nice bought in mechanism instead of the normal Rolex rubbish. Rolexes are for people who are taken in by marketing and image and who haven't the faintest idea about the quality of what they are actually buying.

Oh really???

You cannot compare a £20k Patek with a £2K Rolex. And you can't buy most of those makes for less than a new Rolex - unless you are talking about one of the jewellry encrusted bling monsters.

Different markets.

And I do have a bit of an idea....I really do.....

At the risk of appearing cynical, it does appear to me that the numerous “we hate Rolex” threads started on P’heads fora in itself evidences an “envy factor” that future posters will no doubt deny.

Yes, there are numerous copies available some of which will turn your wrist green and stop working as soon as you’ve handed over your HK Dollars and others which will fool so called experts. I know mine is real.

I have a 35 year old “red” Submariner.

I bought it because I like it.

I'm sorry but after glancing over yet another thread on watches, I find it hilarious that people fuss over Rolex.

I bought one and sold it again, I couldn't wear it as I came to the conclusion that they are only bought by people that wear them for pub power!
They are tacky and unreliable, anyone who knows their timepieces and would prefer a bit of style goes for a better quality timepiece, generally more understated.

Unless they want to compare bills with the local kebab shop owner that is.

Rolex watched are generally worn by people who've come into money (either given to them, or earn't) they want to let everybody know that they can afford expensive things, and almost everbody recognises a rolex. It's an easily recognised status symbol... one that the vast majority of people will recognise. they don't want to take a change on a not so easily recognised status symbol, one that people might miss

How on earth do so many people know why someone has bought a watch?

You'd be surprised, most watches lose a lot of money and have huge markups on them. It's only rare, limited edition or very special watches that tend to appreciate. Including Pateks.

Watches are so subjective, my father bought his Rolex (simple silver perpetual) when he was 21, he is now 63 and it is still going, I bought a Tag when I was 21, I am 33 and apart from having to change the battery once it is still on my wrist and never comes off, so frankly a watch is good if it works and tells the time, mine is just a standard silver Tag bought for telling the time and I thought not a lot of money approx £400, I don't want one that looks like a piece of jewellry and cost £3k. Quite like Ebels though, are they any good?!

Watches only become naff when everybody aspires to have the same one, eg BMW where very cool back in the 70s/80s because noone had one, now they are naff, does not make them bad cars

Lovely.

I am currently wearing my JLC Reverso Duo - just got it back from Switzerland for it's 5 year service.

JLC are pretty much the only brand which make their own mechanisms, and it shows.

Very discreet, and a bit like the Masons - if you wear one, you notice when other people do too.

I also have a 1970's Omega Seamaster Professional which is a bit more "Austin Powers" for the weekend.

If anyone is interested, Timezone.com is worth looking at.

No connection etc.
