Rolex watches = Naff.
Discussion
i love the look of my Zentih Class el primero, i wear it pretty much everyday since i got it (5 years ago). it keeps very good time (-4 secs day). not sure about new look Zeniths, alittle to bling for my liking. but do look nice. i'm thinking of getting something like Girard-Perregaux or Jaeger next but with MrsNST now taking a keen interest in watches means i might have to wait longer while i save up to get a Reverso for her.
nothing wrong with rolex, nice watches but i can't see what is so good about them.

Lovely.
I am currently wearing my JLC Reverso Duo - just got it back from Switzerland for it's 5 year service.
JLC are pretty much the only brand which make their own mechanisms, and it shows.
Very discreet, and a bit like the Masons - if you wear one, you notice when other people do too.
I also have a 1970's Omega Seamaster Professional which is a bit more "Austin Powers" for the weekend.
If anyone is interested, Timezone.com is worth looking at.
No connection etc.
Regards,
Loafer
Got mine after watching John Mills in 'Above us the waves' and I wanted to know what the funny watch he had on was. I'd been looking around for something nice that didn't have a bezel you could eat your dinner off and more buttons that my keyboard.
So I got a Reverso, quite reasonable for a Swiss watch from a good jewellers in Warwick. Other than that I've got a very simple Rotary which my parents bought for me when I was 16 which is a nice watch but more a sentimental keepsake.

"Rolex watched are generally worn by people who've come into money (either given to them, or earn't) they want to let everybody know that they can afford expensive things, and almost everbody recognises a rolex"
Oh do fck off. I saved up a year for mine. I wanted something I could own and wear for the rest of my life and pass on to my heirs.
It's done better than 2% interest in a building society

That watch is remarkably unattractive. IMHO of course.
I have a thing for these:
Though now I know it is a "commodity" watch I may have to reconsider.

The one he has has a metal rather than leather strap which looks better, and is silver with a slate gray face. I think it looks better in reality than in pictures, though I don't think I would have chosen it.
My current favorite is this, which doesn't cost silly money:

Mine was bought as an 18th birthday present and I love it, it holds sentimental value, it's something that I can keep for the rest of my life, it probably won't lose much value and it looks nice on my wrist. People wear what they like, personally I think Ralph Lauren polo shirts look stupid, so I don't wear them, I don't however make assumptions about people who do, because it would be incredibly ignoratn of me, all sorts of different people wear Ralph Lauren polo shirts - all sorts of people wear Rolex watches.

You'd be surprised, most watches lose a lot of money and have huge markups on them. It's only rare, limited edition or very special watches that tend to appreciate. Including Pateks.
No, I wouldn't be surprised. I have been buying and selling prestige watches off and on for years... Most prestige watches take an immediate depreciation hit, much like a car. Rolexes actually fare much better than almost all other brands in this respect.
However, after that initial depreciation the value steadies, and then over years will usually increase. For that very reason you will pay many times more for a Submariner made in 1970 than it sold or at the time - even taking into account inflation it will have done fairly well.
The markups on prestige watches are of course a very closely guarded secret - but then these are small run items, often with considerable development time (if it is a new movement). Exclusivity costs. My Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in SS/18ct is a reasonable watch - but not really any better made than a Rolex, and probably not as well made as an Omega. But is costs a lot more. My Blancpain 50 Fathoms anniversary on the other hand is an awesome watch built exceptionally well.
I think that may be correct to a degree, But I think nowadys there are so many Tags and Omegas being sold that it isn't true anymore.
Generally in any market, for something to increase in value it has to have interest from collectors or desirability, which the average Tag Kirium or Seamaster doesn't have.

At the risk of appearing cynical, it does appear to me that the numerous “we hate Rolex” threads started on P’heads fora in itself evidences an “envy factor” that future posters will no doubt deny.
What rot.
I don't have any Rolexes because they are too downmarket, have a bad image, are mass produced in huge numbers and are not very good watches.
Instead I have a collection, on a row of winders, of some "proper" watches.
You are the one who would be envious.
Just now I am wearing a nice bi-metal El Primero on an Ostrich strap, a vastly superior device to anything Rolex have ever made.

I'm sorry but after glancing over yet another thread on watches, I find it hilarious that people fuss over Rolex.
I bought one and sold it again, I couldn't wear it as I came to the conclusion that they are only bought by people that wear them for pub power!
They are tacky and unreliable, anyone who knows their timepieces and would prefer a bit of style goes for a better quality timepiece, generally more understated.
Unless they want to compare bills with the local kebab shop owner that is.![](/inc/images/wink.gif)

i bought my watch ( like everything else) for me, because i like it. i couldn't give a monkey's what anyone else thinks - they never see it anyway, so it's a moot point.

Then why so many anti-Rolex threads?

BTW Mr Ranger I also have a collection which includes amongst JLC Omega etc. a Zenith Rainbow Flyback (coloured dial) so envious... no, I think not!
