This one, far too much!

Bugger! Now I'm obsessed. Blancpain is accepted (by people who know about watches) as being one of the top 7 manufacturers in the world. I believe them. This watch also reminds me of my favourite watch, the Breitling SuperOcean Heritage 46 with blue face and mesh strap. It is the watch that I wear that gets the most comments. This Blancpain is next on my list, for sure. Next year will see it on my wrist.

Thanks for the linkie!

Saw this on chrono24 and lusted over it for 2 weeks before purchase.......unlike me, this watch is so subtle and tasteful and even keeps half decent time !
Gorgeous! (the watch, not the wrist. hehe) Another of the world top watchmakers!

You can add another vote for that. This is my grail watch. I want the flyback chronograph version. One day!

That is quite novel, wearing a watch on your ankle, don't think it will catch on though. wink
Now I've seen that I just can't stop seeing it hehe

That's just crying out for a GMT hand - am I missing it or did they forget?
Sorry not a watch man, what is a GMT hand?

Greenwich Mean Time hand... Useful, so that when you adjust the time on the main set of hands, when travelling abroad, the time back home is visible also, on the single GMT hand.

To be any use it has to have a 24hr scale, which that watch had nicely sitting in the middle, unused.

My pleasure.

Just a bit odd that it has taken 8 pages of discusion of horological finery to notice that one should obsess rather than obess.

Finally may have settled on something simple & timeless, not costing the earth, that I actually like, for my 21st birthday in January. It'll still be a reputable brand in 50 years hopefully...

Except i've not run it past my parents... and think even the quartz might initially take some convincing... I'd rather the more expensive automatic version for sure!

Second hand perhaps....... confused

I think you're right - ultimately, so long as it's in quite good condition, it's still the watch I want, pre-owned or not... and the first scuff won't hurt as much!

Seen blue automatic 41mm ones for £500 on ebay... feasible, with some convincing.

I'm more of a black and white chronograph man generally, eg. my grail speedmaster, IWC Big Pilot Chrono etc, to be honest, but I want something simple, timeless, smart, that'll still be recognised in 50 years time... all for around £500 price tags - not an unreasonable suggestion for my 21st I hope!

The longines is very nice. Please don't go quartz, they just don't have the same character and I can't see the point in paying a lot for a quartz with the same accuracy as a £7 casio.

If you like the look, like black and white and want auto also check out the 200m Orient Mako, a cracking watch.

Also between those two prices there is the 300m Steinhart,

The Longines has the biggest name though.

Longines was a reputable brand 150 years ago and still is. In fact I gather that they're growing rapidly again.

If you can get the automatic, do it. You'll look at it one day and just think that you wish that the slight extra stretch had been made. The automatic movement just makes it that bit more special.

I wholeheartedly agree with the automatic comments - it's far more special, all the tiny components designed, created and put together to maintain the time, when quartz will do the job just fine, but it's just not the same. Automatic watches have more history, are more traditional, coming hand in hand with more craftsmanship... and the sweeping second hand, and the sound when you put your ear to it, or have your chin resting on your hand in a silent room cloud9

I've found an auto for £610, new, so it's promising. Got £500 from my dad, and hopefully a little contribution from my sister, so i'm not far off!

I've been looking months, for something classy, simple, timeless, and from a reputable brand with heritage, and seen the Orient, and the Steinhart, but for me, it's not the same. My Dad has always had a Longines watch, which makes the Hydroconquest more special in some ways I guess. The Orient is an ideal everyday watch though if I became too precious of the HC.

With my own £500, i'd probably buy a great big flieger/pilot style chrono, but I know the Longines is a more sensible purchase, when it comes to something timeless to hang onto for life.

It's worth the wait I assure you! Mine has been away for a month or so having the bezel sorted after I knocked it and I got the call last week; it's back smile

I'll no doubt do a 'wrist check' again yes
