Wrist Check - 2019
Discussion
Was lucky enough to try on an A. Lange today, one of 100 of this model, absolutely blown away by the level of finish and details of the thing. Excuse the Instagram caption - you know how it be...
Edit: that's probably come out crap. Imgur have ended the ability to use the desktop site on mobile so grabbing BBcode links is pretty much impossible.
On a more realistic note..
Managed to try on a wide range on Panerai and I'm almost convinced a Radiomir needs to find a place in my collection.
Was also offered a Cartier Santos large with blue dial and was pleasantly surprised. I usually dislike Roman numerals on anything other than really dressy watches but the watch really worked for me. 6 grands worth? Hmm....

Snagged this Seiko 7a28 on ebay for a very good price. Produced in the early 80's. It needs a bit of restoration but everything works as should. The main second hand needs replacing. The minute subdial hand needs re-positioning. The hands and dial need re-luming and the case needs a polish. Nothing that can't be done over time. The bracelet is genuine but not the correct one. The 7a28 was the worlds first analogue quartz chronograph. Quite a bonus for the collection.

That's nice. I've never seen a steel/gold sea dweller. The extra bit of colour suits the chunky style of the watch really well.Looks good without the date bubble too.

Yes I also enjoy a Rolex sports model jazzed up a little, makes it a bit more fun - I especially love the gold ‘sea-dweller’ text. The watch does have a date bubble though!Still looks good though.
So this watch is manufactured by Seagull - which is a watch company based in Tianjin, China. This specific model is based on their original “pilots watch” which was made in 1963. The origin of the movement was from a Swiss company (Venus) who sold their tooling to Seagull. I read that it’s very similar to original Omega Speedmaster movements.
Fast forward to today and you have a few options. Being China made it makes it a bit of a minefield what you’re buying - lots of different variants which is made more complicated by the fact Seagull sell the movement to other manufacturers who also make this design of watch.
My watch is from Seagull directly (living in shanghai helps for this...). Currently they have a “limited” run of 5500 watches - the rear casing is solid with the unique ID number of the watch. If you remove the casing you can see “Seagull” written on the movement. And note the chrono hands. It comes with a black leather strap and a green nato. Image below of rear casing:
A lot of the reviews and images on the internet are units with clear rear casings and no “seagull” stamped on the movement. They could be Seagull Tianjin variations, but I don’t think that they are made there.
There is also a brand called HKED who make many different colour variants of the same design. Again using the seagull movement which aren’t stamped with “seagull”. Also some variants on the chrono hands.
A long answer and maybe not even that helpful! I can say it’s a great watch that I really enjoy wearing. The colour of the face changes with different light conditions, and the red/blue hands provide a great contrast. I bought as a memory of my time in China and they do have (along with Seagull watches as a whole) a story behind them.

Many thanks - a long and fantastically helpful answer. What sort of price do they go for, and is there a trustworthy e-bay or other outlet? I can't comment on on a seller as I picked mine up about in 2010. Still in good working order, though I don't wear it as much as I probably should. Hand winding watches is such as hassle
