How about a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms...?
Good shout - the standard 3 hander has a 60hr poower reweserve, lovely watches. Have had the Flyback chronograph and currently have the Flyback Chronograph Complete Calendar, love it!The new Bathyscape chronograph is also worth a look, gorgeous with a very high quality in-house movement.
VC Overseas Dual Time or Chronograph are both lovely as well, JLC and F.Piguet/Blancpain movements respectively.

I never really understand people who make the value the first condition for buying a watch.
I'd go back to what style you like, Divers, dress, chrono, gold, stainless, platinum(?) and then work from there.
I, personally, would NEVER choose a watch based primarily on value. There are a lot of watches I like that I wouldn't choose to spend as much as they are on (notably the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms) and some very cheap watches that I think are just as good (to my eye) as any multi-thousand pound watch.
Buy what you like within your budget rather than looking for something that matches your budget.
So, what is it that you LIKE in a watch (Beside a date and the absence of a Rolex logo)?

You ARE of course totally right.I'd go back to what style you like, Divers, dress, chrono, gold, stainless, platinum(?) and then work from there.

The problem is, applying your logic when you ratchet up the cost of the watch.
Your logic works fine IMO for me up to about £20k for a watch. After that, I really don't want buy an AP for £60k and know it's worth a packet of crisps later.
This could be because I'm too poor and you'd be right.
So in that instance I need to think about value (not because I ever intend on selling what I've bought, but because it WILL sting me that what I've bought for X is now worth 0.1x because as I said above, I'm too poor).
I've played this game in the past and the conclusion is always the same: once it's get to large money, it's Patek Philippe.
The problem for me with the Sub is that A)too many people are wearing it, and B)it seems that SOME of those wearing it have taken out loans or HP in order to buy it so at to "pose". I know a few people on £30-40k pa wearing them and i dont feel that someone on such a basic annual earnings amount should be wearing a £5k watch. There are however guys who have been wearing it since the 70s, who bought it for the right reasons and respect to them.
Have you considered Panerai?
I have a Luminor GMT and absolutely love it - it's big at 44mm
Here's a rare one just above your budget but would hold value well imho:

I'm looking for a new watch, and like with cars you start to browse what you can't afford and I noticed the IWC Da Vinci Chronograph a stunning watch. No idea about whether they hold value but I would if I could and it's in the OPs budget.
