I have bought from private and professional sellers based in Monaco, Portugal, UAE and Sweden.
All absolutely safe as long as you communicate and transact within Chrono24 and pay using their escrow service!

VAT and Duty is applicable to any purchase outside of the UK I believe, so something to consider, unless you can get the watch delivered elsewhere...

It's tempting to do the deal, then fly out to pick up the item. Declare the purchase...or not.
I believe the technical term is "having a senior moment" as you walk through the green barrier with it on your wrist 👍

How much would vat and duty add up on say a £1k watch from Japan via chrono24?

VAT + Import duty. VAT is 20%...import duty is 2.5? I don't know whether the import duty is on the original cost or original cost + VAT though.

When buying overseas from Chrono24, for a watch with a steel caseback, would you immediately have the back removed at a shop to check the movement is legit? I.e. before having them release the funds?

If so I'm assuming you'd be best going to an independent shop rather than an AD, as you've basically circumvented them in the buying process for one reason or another?

Bear in mind if you mark the watch in any way doing that then you won't be able to return it.

Not sure any ADs use C24, but it would kind of defy the point of C24, which is that if you do your research/due diligence you can find some watches for sale quite a bit cheaper abroad than in the UK, even allowing for taxes. Of course the downside is you won't be able (unless you find a watch in the UK) to physically see the watch before you buy. From what I've read though, most people are very pleased with their purchases and don't forget you have a window to return the watch if you're not happy with it. HTH.

ADs use C24, and can be very competitive.

Not seen any ADs but I must admit I rarely look beyond the advert on C24, unless it's something I'd seriously consider. I'm probably looking at the cheaper end of the market anyway.

So how are you supposed to verify your purchase?
