That is a good call, GC8, but having only had Swiss watches to date, I think I'm turning Japanese, yes I'm turning Japanese, I really think so.

is well worth a look - the blog entries are primarily about restoring/repairing old Seikos but most of them have detailed history and information about each different model and the various ranges they come from.

Cheers! I do admire nerdiness in all its forms. Keeping old machines alive is an important thing to do, in a World of disposable blah.

Early 60's Seiko you say. You could say I'm quite fond of them.

Timely thread, I've been looking for a birth year watch and was thinking Grand Seiko First or similar.

Fun!

The one second from left is, I am fairly sure, one like the one that I lost that day in the 1980s.

1962 for me - I already have one watch and one car from that year. I would like a 1962 motorbike as well.

I'm a 63-er, so if you find a near-miss let me know! (Not a motorbike though; cars or watches only).

My Grand Seiko First is dated December 1960, my birth month and year. I thought that was it and I could stop collecting watches now, except I can't and have another one coming for my 60th but not a Seiko this time.

Decent looking 1962-63 Vauxhall FB 1500 on eBay right now, but better to wait for a VX 4/90?

The stainless one was a beater I inherited from my father-in-law. A fresh crystal and strap made presentable. The rest were birthday presents from my Wife after I pointed her in the right direction. The Grand Seiko is a bit rough but I like it. Probably well under £1000 for all four of them.

It's a model 66-9990. Mine is from 1963. Plenty on ebay and relatively cheap at less than £100. I like the simplicity and clean lines of it and the size makes it a nice ladies watch.

Grand Seiko are genuine rivals for the high end Swiss makers.

The finishing on the dial markers is something else, like metal origamibiggrin

This IMHO is seriously good value...
