Gucci Watches - worth it?

Are Gucci a reasonable make of watch, or just an over-priced fashion watch where you're paying for the brand name and the watch is just a cheap mass produced item?
spot on - i ended buying my wife a cartier tank francaise, which was a probably the same but cost even moreAdam B said:

Some real history and tradition there

...apparently is water resistant to 30m, which effectively makes it only splash proof...
Everyone else commented on the watch but I'll pick-up on this one. Only splash proof!!! At 30 meters depth, bloody big splashes round your way, what you expecting, a tsunami? toohuge said:

For interest, here's a good article on what the various ratings mean, an explanation of the static/dynamic pressure factor and what tests apply to what rating and what that means in practise:
Water Resistance

£650 for a watch that you can't shower in, WTF?!
Having said that, the OH is now considering an Omega Constellation small and they're twice the price without being any better as far as I can tell. I'd expect to find splash proof watches in a cracker, not in an Omega or Gucci box.

Having said that I'm looking for a Heuer Monaco for myself and these can come in at £2.5K yet are still not recommended to be worn whilst swimming in!
What's so important about showering with a watch on? Even with watches with a decent level of water resistance, it's not recommended. If you want a watch that can be submerged, you need to buy an adequately water resistant watch.
I have an Omega that used to belong to my grandfather. I keep water well away from that watch. I have other watches that are not so fussy about water...I let them get wet.
Landy drivers don't complain that they can't post a decent lap time in their vehicle. Caterham drivers don't complain that their vehicle is useless for pulling hatchbacks out of snow drifts. As with anything in life, get the right tool for the job, and use it as it was designed.

The key here is the circumstances where a watch might get wet and how.
Taking a watch into the shower would subject it to a great deal of water (though not immersion in water) but crucially to hot water and steam which could compromise the integrity of the seal. Inside all watches there is a rubber gasket that helps to seal the case from the ingression of dust, moisture and water. This seal can be affected by hot water, resulting in the seal expanding thus affecting water resistance. I doubt there are many owners here (even with diving watches) that would wear them in the shower.

I was thinking of an analogy involved a Landy, a Ferrari and the fording a river but I think your examples is more succinct!!!I have an Omega that used to belong to my grandfather. I keep water well away from that watch. I have other watches that are not so fussy about water...I let them get wet.

Perhaps I'm in the minority but one of the criteria for my watch at the time was that I'd at least be able to take a bath/shower/swim and the occasional dive (basically lead a normal life) without taking it off - I've done that for ten years with it and it's been fine. I remember a pal taking off his new Speedmaster in a Paris toilet to wash his hands. Two hours later he looked at the place where his watch used to be and went ashen. youngsyr said:
My girlfriend is contemplating buying a Gucci G-Class watch
My wife has one of those. I was concerned about spending £500 on something that might be more chavvy than a Burberry baseball cap, but she looked at others and just wanted that one.I did see comments about unreliability etc and Gucci not being helpful, but the manaager of the shop looked me in the eye and said I was buying from him, not Gucci, and he would look after us. He said he understood the branding thing, but it was only "fashion" name watch they stocked and he was confident about its quality and reliability. We'll see. He was a lot more believeable than most car salesmen I've ever dealt with.
One thing that did surprise me is I couldn't get much discount in the high street. Another jeweller refused to budge and the one we bought it off knocked a token £20 off. I bought wifey a Raymond Weil watch for a similar price a few years ago and got 20% off that.
