Oh yes completely and utterly agree. They mostly seem to be bought by folk who want to say "LOOK AT MY ROLEX"

I bought mine because I liked it. I had a shopful of watches to choose from, but that was one that fitted in with my budget, it's fairly plain and straightforward (Oyster Perpetual) and I did actually like it.

Does that make me a bad person? confused

Well, apparently according to some of the style gurus on here it does.

You should be ashamed at owning a nice watch. What were you thinking FFS? You could have spent that money on lager.

No idea of the UK retail price but s/s Explorer II's are sourceable for about gbp 2400 from Switzerland last time I checked...

Thanks very much.

I, er, well, just bought one today. It was shiny, you see, and nice.

And sort of understated.

I bought it from Mappin and Webb in terminal 3 at Heathrow, over the phone, and pick it up on Sunday.

Great watch, simple understated, classic design, built like a brick outhouse and not too expensive. Now I would never say this was naff. Some of the gold rolex's aren't to my taste but this is a classic. So many watches now try to copy the basic style.

Mines 20 yrs old more or less.

Isn't it remarkable how so many people care about what a stranger does with his or her money.

I don't have a rolex (and couldn't afford one), and dont particularly like the models even if I could, but thats just my opionion and to stereotype or judge people based on what watch they wear is a bit ignorant!

I like my watch, don't know anything about the internals / workings but I like to look at it, and that's all that matters. If everyone else hates it because of its brand / lack of brand, oh well

What rot.
I don't have any Rolexes because they are too downmarket, have a bad image, are mass produced in huge numbers and are not very good watches.
Instead I have a collection, on a row of winders, of some "proper" watches.
You are the one who would be envious.

Just now I am wearing a nice bi-metal El Primero on an Ostrich strap, a vastly superior device to anything Rolex have ever made.

I never realised the brand carried such vitriol. Think I'll have to go and get another.

it's a bit like Rolls Royces and Bentleys

people who have just come into money and want others to know, buy a Rolls... people who've always had money and don't care if anybody knows about it, but a Bentley

It's the Rolls people who buy Rolex's

I think you'll find it's the other way round

I've just read the first 6 pages or so of this and have to say that I didn't realise what a bunch of opinionated and judgemental tossers we are on Pistonheads.

Live and let live FFS, it takes all sorts remember.

Never owned or worn a watch ... But I tend to agree .... the Rolex look just says CHAV to me

So you've never owned a watch, but have an opionion on a timepiece that costs upwards of 1500 pounds? Thank you for sharing that with us

Do you know what a chav is? with a statement like that I doubt it.

I've got a black faced daytona (silver) in my collection, and absolutely love it, easily my favourite watch, possibly of all time.
Doesn't bother me what people think of rolex's, though there does seem to be a lot of bandwagon revellers coming out of the woodwork in this thread for some reason.
Watches are a hugely personal thing, but for me it doesn't get any better than my daytona, perfect size and shape for my tastes, reasonably subtle and looks good.
I put watches at the same rung of the ladder as cars with regards to them being a personal affair. Many of the watches mentioned on this thread are awful in my opinion, but I do appreciate that others like them, in the same way that a lot of people like audi TT's, boxsters, and so on, where I don't, but I do see people's reasons for liking them.
I guess I'm just a tasteless chav at heart if the more opinionated on this thread are to be believed.

well put that man!!

And just to add...

In my collection I have a briel Chronogrpah with a lovely Ostrich leather strap. Cost £230.

I agree with some of the sentiments here about "live and let live". I collect watches and have done for years (never throw one out, always happy to give an old one a new home laugh). Not a fan of Rolex but would never attack someone for wearing or wanting one.

Thanks. It was £2,330 once the tax came off. I suppose I could have maybe saved a bit more if I'd kept looking abroad, but not very much, I expect.

I am really pleased now. Very happy to have stopped messing around and bought one. Looking back, it seems silly that I might have wanted the money sitting in the bank, instead of the watch on my wrist.

I have owned an El Primero in the past. It is a reasonably nice chronograph at a budget price. I had it with an aligator band though, as everyone knows Ostrich bands are only worn by rampant homosexuals of the receiving pursuasion - a bit like having a single earring in your right ear.

Got to say, I'm getting to really like some of the vintage Heuer watches. Tonker posted a thread recently about them.

The chap had a Heuer Silverstone in....check this out:

The real concern though is the bi-metal.
Buy steel or buy gold. Bi-metal = bi-curious.

A good point! So what you are saying is that Loneranger is not just a big gayer who likes to bend over and take it, but that he actually likes to play at both ends of the crease?

Interesting isn't it? I never knew a watch could say so much about a person!

Indeed, it does make me think he enjoys his vice versa.

Having said that, I do have an Audemars Piguet in steel and gold. However, when someone offers you their entirely legit boxed and papered Royal Oak for £400, you are far too busy biting their hand off at the ankle to give a feck what a colour it is...
