I’m on list for a few pieces with AD I’ve used before. AD contacted me this morning, not for any of the pieces I’m waiting for but to advise they had an unworn Batman on oyster bracelet in and was I interested? Stock held back to be sold on once discontinued for a premium? Possibly...

Anyway, I said yes, absolutely and made an appointment to pop along a couple hours later with a view to doing the deal. Whilst en route I got a message to say the watch was being sold to another random punter who walked in off the street. I was within 100m of the store at that point - seriously not impressed!

That said, here I am on a Friday night venting & moaning about a missed luxury watch purchase. If that’s the worst thing to happen to me this weekend, I guess I’m doing ok.

Awaiting a PHer to pop up with the “you’ll never guess what I found walking past AD today?!” post hehe
Why didn't you just buy it over the phone and then pick it up? Sounds a odd to me either way.

I was kind of thinking the same. Your initial post suggests to me that you hadn't made a commitment to buy. "view to doing a deal" suggests you were thinking about it. If I wanted it & was going to buy it I'd have offered them a deposit or full payment over the phone.

It reads more like you were going to view a car, but another viewer got there before you & bought it.

I missed that. I assumed they said we’ve got one in and he said YES I DEFINITELY want it I’m coming to get it now and they sold it on the way in.

Makes loads more sense if there was no commitment to buy or deposit etc at that point.

Thanks guys and reflecting on it, I'll accept an element on naivety on my part - I'm by no means a battle scarred veteran of luxury watch purchases and it's a learning curve dealing with AD's for sought after pieces.

When price was discussed, I was given a figure but told "we should be able to do something on that". I asked where they could get to to be told "that would need to be an in-store discussion". It was at that point the appointment was made - not a vague "I'll try and pop in later for a chat" but an agreed time. No mention of deposit needed, etc. If there was, it would have been given no question.

You live you learn. Anyway, sun is shining and off out today to see what Glasgow has to offer. Have a good one!

We all live and learn!

When I get a call it’s either a simple yes or no. Yes means I’ll be at the shop that day before they close to collect.

Last yes was a black GMTII. Most recent no’s were a Sea Dweller (too big for me), steel Yachtmaster and an Air King (nearly buckled on that one (love the simplicity)).

Hoping the next yes will be a black Submariner or if really lucky, a new Pepsi.

I was on my way out for a day of AD schmoozing across the south east (after putting my name down on my local AD for a sub date), and freakingly whilst halfway there I got a phone call from my local AD, I pulled over immediately to take the call, "Hello Mr M, we have in our possession a black submariner date would you like to purchase It?" she said. "can you hold It for me if I give you a deposit as I am 40 miles from you at present", "no we can not take a deposit over the phone , you will need to come to the branch and pay in full Mr M", "OK Im on my
way but I will call you back in 3 mins to confirm as I have to transfer sum cash to pay you" "OK MR M Please call In 3 mins" . I tried to transfer the cash from a to b ,(sorry for your inconvenience we are doing essential maintenance please try later) so I turned round and started heading back to the AD in question pulled, over again after 5mins and made another attempt. Bingo your funds have been transferred to your named account! Made the call. "Im on my way".... Whole Day was surreal, didn't think for one minute that I would have returned home that day with a
brand new sub .

You watch; this will be formally recognised as a ‘thing’ in English culture soon I reckon. What will social or business historians in a 100 years make of it!?

What would people outside Rolex forums make of it today? The whole thing is madness.

People feeling so lucky a watch dealer has actually sold them a watch.

Yes this is madness I agree. I have been looking for a new watch and didn't realise once I had made my decision that you could not just walk in to a dealer and buy one, however it only took me a couple of weeks from start to finish so no big deal, I don't like being told I cant have . I wanted a Rolex Sub and I got a Rolex Sub, and had a bit of fun in the process. just my personal experience that's all no harm to you I hope as it seems you may have strayed onto the wrong furum..

Were they talking rrp , discount from rrp or substantially over rrp?

Substantially over rrp - It was being sold as a new / unworn pre owned watch following the news it had been discontinued. The cynic in me says it was held back so that they could sell over rrp once discontinued (am I right that they can’t do this for current stock as they are AD hence why we have this crazy grey market scenario?)

That correct ADs are only supposed to sell at RRP.

In that case, I'd say you've dodged a bullet, and avoided having your pants down

Some ADs also sell pre-owned at market value

See attached for info on the "New" BLNR

https://monochrome-watches.com/hands-on-review-rol...

Sure the new movement is an upgrade, but otherwise meh. I'll keep the one I've got even though the PCL centre link oyster bracelet is not my favourite, I prefer it to the jubilee.
