What is worrying is that people seem to think they’ve some sort of birthright to just walk in and buy whatever they want, there and then.
You find that worrying?

This beautifully sums up just how crazy the Rolex situation is.

Of course, I don’t have any right at all to go and spend £9,000 and get a watch I like, how arrogant of me!

I was thinking of getting some Michelin Super Sports next but I should probably calm down and get into my appropriate place on the list.
Quite.

I wouldn't expect them to have the exact watch I wanted but a similar model? Yes, absolutely. And the ability to order the exact model I wanted and have it delivered in a few months or weeks? Well, every other mass market watch manufacturer seems able to do this.

And they’re not making as much as Rolex do?
Are any of us successful marketing experts for blue chip companies?
I know who I’d trust planning the future of my company and its advertising, and I doubt it’d be a bloke off a dysfunctional car forum! Or me.

It is worse than that though.

It is like walking into BMW and saying "I would like to buy an M4"
"ooooh, wouldn't we all sir? Wouldn't we all? Perhaps if Sir were to but a 218i first, then a 320d, we could then consider putting him on the list for the car he actually likes."

Seriously, it is ridiculous.

Having to wait on a list is one thing, being made to buy something you don't want is taking the piss.

I didn't say it wasn't working for them. But it is a mad situation. What is even more crazy is that most customers seemingly don't find it off-putting.

I just got back from HK last week. Went to about five or six stores looking for an Air King or anything SS sports.
Of course there was nothing in any store.
However one Rolex chap owned up and said that basically, they keep ordering, but nothing turns up.
Every now and then they get one or two Stainless Sports models at the bottom of a box from Rolex and that's it. No information is forthcoming from Rolex themselves.

The dealers are just as frustrated apparently.

Rolex are wkers and can piss right off.

Total joke. The mass produce watches and won't sell you one to make them appear exclusive.. They are treating customers like plebs.

As I said, am buying a nice Seiko, but in 3 yrs I'll be looking at a big money watch, which was a Day Date, now I'm not so sure.

I couldn't car less and your patronising tone is what Rolex expect from there little fanboys.

Point is I've spent the thick end of 20k with them and won't be arsed if I never spend any more with them.

So it’s 2 months since the mythical “sale” sparked the question about whether the bubble has burst and it hasn’t has it!

Maybe slight softening of the more extreme premium watches from reasonable dealers but hardly “burst”

And I bought my only Rolex, used, from an independent dealer six years ago, so I’m far from being a fanboy.

There are people starving in this world, babies born with cancer, women abducted for slavery and rape, and yet people get upset about luxury goods? C’mon.

What does “actually” add to your post?

Oh this is so easy. Just need a line with a hook, no bait at all.

Agreed I bought my Rolex watches back when you could just walk in off the street and actually buy their products, can you imagine?

fk practically having to beg them to take my money, I'll just buy another brand.

It’s not a matter of practically begging. They just don’t have them.

Is their production genuinely more limited compared to demand than say Hermes, who we all know have the same strategy i.e. buy a few scarves to be allowed a bag?

No, it’s a marketing strategy.

They could easily stop making blinged up DJs overnight and make more SS sports, but they don’t want to.

They could see the brand being diluted, a lot like what happened to Burberry and LV when they became ubiquitous.

So they limited supply to make the brand exclusive again and you have to hand it to them, it has worked.
