Nice places to live near Hatfield
Discussion
another vote for Hitchin/Letchworth - i'm in the later after beeing in Hertford for 15yrs. More for your money in Letch and the worlds first roundabout...
Train service into London from Hitch & Letch is now really quick and runs to Brighton and Cambridge.
Active motor club and classic scene in Hitchin too with a monthly meet for the HTown Classics and Dub Club first Monday of the month - check out FB - don't think its a bug fest - there's lots of other interesting kit as well.

Hi psychoR1,
We are just about to return to Letchworth (Lordship) after selling our place in France. Driving over tomorrow for a few days to drop some stuff off then moving back over full time at the end of August. You may see a grey French reg Kangoo out and about over the next few days!!!

There was a thread a few months ago from someone looking for suggestions for Hertford, a lot of that would apply for Hatfield too.
Bear in mind A1M 'bottleneck' at Welwyn (J6) is a mare at evening rush hour and A414 is a mare am & pm rush hour
I'll second that. Everyone is living up North from Biggleswade and beyond and commuting into Herts because of the ridiculous house prices in Herts. From September through to the end of April it's horrendous. Thankfully I shall be seeing the back of it in a few weeks :-\. That's from Baldock all the way to Welwyn. So I would find the nicest place you can as near to work as possible from the suggestions given (and avoid travel on the A1)

I wouldn’t go towards the M25.
The benefit of living south of Hatfield is that your commute will be against the main flow of traffic, assuming you'd be driving. As others have said it just depends what you want out of your home location as village vs town will be your first decision to narrow it down.
I commute to Hatfield from Hemel Hempstead, avoiding the A414.
Usually 35 minutes each way
It's fine most mornings but St Albans can get clogged up in the mornings during school term time if I'm running a bit late.
(PS I just realised you're looking for somewhere nice, which probably rules ot HH...)

I'm in Letchworth too-well connected with the A1 and rail service (I should know-I work on it!).
Quite a nice little town centre with a few half decent pubs, restaurants and shops, plus a very good "old school" cinema. For major shopping you'll need to go to WGC or Milton Keynes but there's also a reasonable retail park at Biggleswade.
Overall, I can recommend it-take a look at Stotfold too, just north of Letchworth. You'd need to drive to the station from there, though.
I'd avoid Arlesey and north of there if you plan to commute via train as you'll need to change at Hitchin or Stevenage, which is a bit of a pain. Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock & Royston all have a direct train to Hatfield. Hitchin is expensive for what it is, but nice.

Thank you for all the comments and suggestions, been a bit slow on this as only just got the contract signed.
I am looking at renting, probably someones spare room to start with, don't mind a half hour or so commute. Definitely would prefer a village location.
Spent a day up there a few weeks back, looked at Hertford which is nice but the commute looks to be a pain. Also a place on the east side of St Albans, traffic is busy, no where to park as double yellows everywhere.
Will be heading back as I start in a couple of weeks so need to sort something out.

I would look very closely at where you will be working and work out your commute exactly - roads in this area are prone to localised bottle necks - a lot of your commute will be dependent on exact time and other traffic - especially when the school run starts.
I used to live in Reading and commute to St Albans 47 miles each way M4/M25 45minutes leaving by 6.15am (it was a few years ago) - when I moved to Hertford the commute was much shorter 15miles but often took 45mins due to the A414 traffic.
You also need to think about what happens when there is a problem on the A1/M25/M1 as a lot of traffic reroutes to the A414 and through St Albans....

I grew up in Codicote (one mile north of Welwyn), went to school in Hitchin and have lived in St.Albans for 13 years.
Best places are St.Albans, Harpenden which are expensive. I'd look at the villages if you want more value, Codicote, Welwyn, Kimpton, Whitwell or Wheathampstead.
That way you're still close to Hatfield.

Hitchin is nice, I spent about 5 years commuting into London from there, but lived in a village just outside called Shillington. We moved 2 years ago, and like many moved a bit further north to get a lot more for our money (big garden, driveway to fit more cars on etc). So we chose Langford, which is about 10 mins drive north of Hitchin and the next stop up on the train. The bonus also being that station parking was much cheaper and you always get a seat on the train!!
