Is this the 14 new Chinooks that was originally going to be 22 back about 2-3 years ago?
Yes, and replacing the Merlins which are, in turn, replacing the Sea Kings on the Jungly Squadrons.Eric Mc said:
Why are the Merlins being replaced so soon. Are they a bit rubbish at Jungly operations?
They're not being replaced/rid of - the RAF are simply transferring their Merlins to the Commando Helicopter Force (who need a replacement for the Sea King) and getting some extra Chinooks to make up for it.Hang on.
1. When are the choppers required to stop our guys getting blown up en route by IED's?
2. We're due out of Afg When?
3. When does HMG finish their foreign adventures ?
4. When is the Army disbanding en-masse?
This is pants. We need then NOW [you can never have enough battle buses in theatre] not 3 yrs time.

A - are there any Chinnoks in store there?
B - even if there were, it would take quite a while to make them useable again and to make them compatable with RAF and other British military equipment.
I think he was joking...B - even if there were, it would take quite a while to make them useable again and to make them compatable with RAF and other British military equipment.
NO.
Any type will do.
But like NOW not in 3 yrs.
It has always happened and always will.
Peacetime: We will never need this stuff again, let's sell it. The people want cake not guns.
Wartime: Oh st we need guns again
Repeat ad infinitum.
Not sure who said this but I like it: 'Those who beat their swords into ploughshares usually end up farming for those who didn't'

I'm sure if the RAF/Govt. asked the Americans nicely
"Barack, I was wondering, is there any chance we could have / purchase for a low price, some of the aircraft you have got sitting out in the desert that you aren't using? "
They'd get told to Foxtrot Oscar because those lovely aircraft parked in the desert are there to prove they have been decommissioned as per international treaty requirements."Barack, I was wondering, is there any chance we could have / purchase for a low price, some of the aircraft you have got sitting out in the desert that you aren't using? You can bet where ever the army go next the Chinooks will be of limited use.
