Well, we've had the planes, we've had the trains - we've even had the sci-fi thread - but now a slightly broader subject - engineering.

If it's engineered and looks cool, post it here!

My first two candidates:

The Humber Bridge:

Humber Bridge

A working model of an 18-cylinder Napier Deltic engine:

Forth bridge 120 years old and still standing, more than we seem to be able to do these days i.e forth road bridge 40 years old and slowly falling to bits.

8000+hp from an 8.3L, 2 valve per cylinder, pushrod V8 is impressive engineering in my book. Fuel consumption at the same rate as a Jumbo Jet, 3.1 on the Richter Scale, the heat from the exhausts ripping the hydrogen from the air to create the "bunny ears". 0-200 in 220 yards and 2 seconds, anyone?

That facts and figures associated with Top Fuel are simply astounding.

The working model is an 18-cylinder, opposed piston, 2-stroke, spark ignition engine.

I read about this, some sort of top secret gearing right?
Why were they all crushed?

they were all crushed when Honda decided they'd proved whatever point they were making and pulled out of world cup DH competitions, I guess they didn't want any rivals getting hold of them.

The whole race programme was pretty much shrouded in secrecy from start to finish, but as a result EVERYONE wanted one!

I think it may have turned out the gearbox wasn't actually all that clever, but they covered it up with carbon fibre to make sure no-one really ever knew.

It wasnt just the gearbox. The whole project was intriguing, no one really knew why Honda did it for a couple of years. They broke into the sport with a fantastic, revolutionary bike, and did very well. There bikes were rumuored to be valued at about £100k each.

When the project concluded, apparently all the bikes were crushed to stop them ending up in the hands of others. Presumably Honda may still have one.

As for the gearbox, again, no-one really knew. It probably wasnt all the clever, just they came into the sport with no preconceptions and a presumably large budget, so did what everyone else was thinking about.

They were stunning to behold in person though, as was the whole setup with the team and engineers.

ETA - yup, pretty much what we've both said then!
