Passsed a Trainee Train Driver Assessment
Discussion
I'm going tomorrow to see what they say. But fearing the worst. If I am colour blind I'm certainly not that bad. I can read traffic light no problem and tell the difference between colours. I play snooker so I can't be that bad. Just couldn't see some of the numbers on the colour plates.
Thanks Stedman. It's not much conciliation at the moment but I am kind of proud how far I got and the fact the only thing stopping me going all the way is something completely beyond my control. I got a lot further than I ever thought I could or would so have to be pleased with that. Just that last hurdle that's done me. I'm gutted obviously. Considering I had my Managers interview immediately after my failed medical I think I did pretty well. All to avail, but definitely earned a birthday beer tomorrow.
Well more developments with my attempts to become a train driver. After failing my medical due to suspected colour blindness, I went for a full eye examination yesterday including a colour blindness test. Fortunately I passed with flying colours so to speak, so the dreams not over yet. Another medical to go through now. Fingers crossed, again.
The railways seem to have a habit of getting medicals wrong, I nearly lost my job as I was told I was diabetic when I went for the medical.
I had the medical on a Wednesday and should of started on the Friday at a yard.
Lucky for me my doctor was on the ball and I managed to get a blood test the following day and the results sent straight off showing that I was completely fine.
I know of one case where someone took the driver training and passed at 18 even though you have to be 21 so it meant waiting for 3 years before he could go near a train, all because he was a managers son.
So if you don't get in dont think its anything you've done wrong, it can be a case of who you know.
I've been on the waiting list for any rail work within the franchise for years, I have the line cards PTS paperwork as I work 3 months a year as a fitter,
When I go back to the yard every year I hear how someone in the know has got their brother son etc a place so don't build your hopes up to much its sometimes easier just to try and get your foot in the door first, if you can.

the medicals are contracted out , in my companies case to bupa .if anyone goes for a railway job and fails the medical , i'd always advise to get an independent one done ( the worst you're gonna get is the same result )
at the mo , there is a lot of drivers moving away from DBs , so it might be a good idea to try them .

It is a family business. Still amazes me to the extent this stretches. So if you don't get in dont think its anything you've done wrong, it can be a case of who you know.

As far a drivers moving away from DBS, there is prob a reason for that. Some of the smaller hauliers have far better relationships with their staff.
Went for another medical yesterday, passed everything apart from the ECG because the ECG machine was broken. So I have to have that next week. I received a call today offering me the job as long as I pass the ECG. The doctor was querying why i failed my colour vision test first time around. I dont have the answers to this. I put it down to poor lighting as one of the tubes was out and also a bit of nerves too, but he still queried it. Should i be worried? Ive had a full eye examination since my first medical and they said my vision including colour vision is normal and I passed it again yesterday so I really dont see the issue. It cant come back and bite me on the arse surely.
