On a personal level, I hardly ever pay for Business/First and instead use Miles to upgrade.
I'm in the Qantas FF program. If I park my Qantas points (they don't expire) and accumulate BA Avios points while I'm living in the UK..... do you have to book a particular fare class to upgrade on BA using points? eg can you book a cheap economy V fare class ticket and upgrade with points, or do you have to buy an expensive Y/H fare class economy ticket to upgrade with points?
This doesn't quite answer your question, but - I have an Amex/BA companion voucher (= buy one ticket completely on Avios for any class, any destination and we'll give you a second matching ticket) and was looking to use it for a trip to Oz around September time, and even being really flexible on dates I am finding it extremely difficult to find any availability. Suddenly the companion voucher offer doesn't look so good. frown

My understanding is that the BA programme is not the most generous for UK residents. The rules as to which kind of ticket earned rewards used to be different if you were registered as, say, a US resident, so check that out before switching.

Also staying with a Oneworld partner and recording your miles with the partner (for me, American Airlines) can give you much better rewards and upgradeability.
Do you get better reward availability on BA as an AA member than you do as a BA EC member, if you do i may have to look into this.

Agreed.

Availability is very poor.

It all seems like a bit of a scam really as not much is available.

To answer both questions:

Nearly all BA booked tickets can be upgraded apart from the lowest of the low economy tickets. This is different to Virgin where no cheaper tickets can be upgraded; they have to be flexible or semi-flexible. Best use is to book a World Traveller Plus ticket and then upgrade to Club. 12500 miles each way for the upgrade and well worth it.

On the companion ticket, using it for a trip to Oz is very difficult, especially now as BA and Qantas are no longer partners. I've use companion tickets before, especially to the States, and including taxes have flown myself and the wife in First Class for less than £800 in total plus 150,000 miles which is a bloody good deal in my book.

Companion vouchers can be a pig at the last minute or on busy routes / times of year, so it pays (ahem) to book well in advance.

I done some (reasonably half-a$$ed) research on getting BA tickets using points in Club World. Flights to HK seem to be a problem. Qantas still fly Oz-HK, so you should be able to book on Qantas regardless of the end of any codeshares with BA, as Qantas and BA are both OneWorld... except that the BA award flights to HK are a problem. In contrast, going to NYC using BA Avios was not a problem.

I've in the past looked at Oz-UK flights using Qantas points. In that case the Oz-HK flight is a problem, but the HK-UK flight was not a problem.

Thanks for the info about upgrading points btw, very useful biggrin

Unless I'm mistaken you can only use the companion ticket on BA flights.

Thanks for the heads up. Though I would rather stab cocktail sticks in my eyes than ever set foot anywhere near American Airlines ever again.

They do some nice stopover deals in Reykavik if you strike it lucky with one of their heavenly stewardesses.

Consider my cap well and truly doffed sir. The lure of the lounge always encourages me to check in extra early. Last time I was watching Oldham beat Liverpool in the FA Cup, which added to the ambience.

+1
The Virgin Upper lounge at Heathrow has many enticements to get there early. Great place.
