Chally more reliable, and easier to work on
There was an exercise we did around 1989 where at the time A squadron were still with Chieftains, B,C & D squadron were using Challenger 1. At one point in the 2 week exercise there were more Chieftains on the road than Challys in the other squadrons, we were just breaking gearboxes every day. As the engine & gearbox comes out as one unit (known as 'the pack') some squadrons were at less than half strength due to unreliability. They said afterwards it was down to dirty biscuits (big main engine air filter) & drivers then had to bang the dust out each evening.
No one had any engine problems just gearbox so why the engine air cleaner had anything to do with it I don't know! Also a point on being easier to work on, with a Chieftain you could actually work on it & fix it, with Chally if there's any probs with the pack then it was a pack change & it would be repaird back at base workshops so in the field you'd never really work on it.
Anyway, Chally 2 has a completely different gearbox to Chally 1 so I guess they are a lot more reliable now.
Edit to say I thought I had a pic, heres a Chally 1 pack, on the way back to base workshops, another pack change!
Now thats what you call a turbo, theres another one on the other side as its a V12. Beautiful!

I'll see your gearboxes and raise you a large but unspecified number of muff couplings.

Muff couplings, Quill shafts, TOGs, APFSDS, APU, CPU, GUE, MECU, CV12, TN37, L60, TN12...Its a foreign language!I remember a mate being P1954'd for his 1157 as he lost the lot, no normal person would have a clue what you were on about!...& I still love a cheese & jam sandwich & have my tea Nato
So were you in when the 2 regiments amalgamated? (getting abit off topic!)

The best Sherman, the M51 "Super Sherman" from the Israeli Defense Force.
Nice bit of Upgrading of an Obsolete tank to punch above its wait against what was then modern Armour (1950,60,70's)
The Shermans old foe the Panzer was used in small numbers by the Syrians.
