Do we know if it was one of the early batch of BA 777s with the GE engines or is it a later model with the Rolls Royce Trent engines?

It's what a couple of hundred tonnes, (if that), unladen. I would imagine a large crane would manage that without too much trouble to put it on some sort of lowloader.

SHIT! Just 100 thousand centimetres away? Less than three quarters of a mile? I'd have shat myself to pieces if I were that close. I'm quite glad that i'm not an ATCO yet. You'd earn your money today if you were on London Terminal Control.

When it comes to life/death/emergency there's no hierarchy in situations like this. Can you imagine the people in first class on the titanic writing to complain that they didn't get first choice of lifeboat?
Yes. And then selling their story to the papers. I cant decide if people like that are just being canny because they know they'll be compensated, or if they are so insulated from day to day reality that they think they have a genuine complaint.

So let's say you were on the plane and got off safely - the furore dies down and you get back into normal life.......what do British Airaws do to compensate you for not completing your journey in it's entirety and for the distress etc?? Do you think they will give you another free return trip...or "in flight duty free vouchers" or something?
They arrived on time, whats the problem? biggrin He probably didnt, with the fire risk- but I'd love it if the captain continued his "Welcome to LHR, ladies & gentlemen, the temperature outside is 12 degrees, with just a little rain. Thank you for flying with British Airways, we wish you a pleasant afternoon" speel. hehe
The pilot on my flight in last friday was very apologetic during his little speech at the end, after we had been waiting for an hour less than a hundred yards from the gate while they found a dude on the ground to guide us in. It's not as if we had turned up unexpected! My colleague was telling me that a few weeks before that on the same flight there was another hour delay on the gate while they waited for the guy that plugs the electric cable in to turn up...

Looking at that photo, it's not even lined up for an attempt on the runway. You can watch them 'drift' in from the road there (and many spotters do) but that's a woeful approach, not even close.

Incidentally, until a few years ago, there was a 'level crossing' there which used to close as they put a plane in or took a plane out of one of the hangars. Everyday at about 8.15am, they use to tow a Concorde out for the 11am flight.

It's gone now, can't help thinking though, imagine being there in your car with that thing screaming over you 6ft above your roof....

"Erm, hello love, no nothing to worry about, it's just can you come over to the works car park and drop off a new pair of undies and trousers for me, there's been a bit of a mishap..."

I bet when you get to the other end it'll be the quietest cabin you'll ever experience on a landing approach hehe

"Were you worried?"

"Did you die?"

"Did you see the PM running in the opposite direction?"

That sort of thing.

Chuckling sinisterly and holding important bits of flight control systems under his jacket, no doubt.

Apparently passengers were warned of this well in advance, so was a 'planned' emergency landing, I would be buying lottery tickets if I were them, this could have been a disaster.

Hi folks.

This Aircraft BA38 passed through our sectors about 30mins before landing and didnt declare any sort of fuel issues - so I think we can disregard that as a reason.

Bit of info for you:

They are back to single runway operations at LHR, accepting flights to land on an individual basis.

Looks like they are starting deps again too.

Most longhauls are holding at the moment, but expect to divert to London airports depending on how much fuel they have for holding.

European shorthauls are either not taking off or diverting (Some Frankfurt deps. have even been going to Brussels instead).

However the picture does look to be getting slightly better.
