I edited my post above slightly because I realised I'd just repeated what you said. Oops.

No worries, just edited my post to include an interview with the guy. Interesting.

Popular theory is that it was a pre-production F-22 or an updated SR-71 Blackbird which the USAF "retired" years ago.
The reports I read described the tail as being like an F-22 now you come to mention it.

Given the problems they had with the production F-22 when it came into service, flying from the states to Japan (I think) and its nav system not liking the dateline, I'd be pretty confident to rule out development/prototype F-22 (although I still would subscribe more to the details within pushthebuttons post)

Hunt for Zero Point by Nick Cook is good.
They mention Aurora in that.
I'll second that, one of the best books I've ever read.

Wouldn't it then have to go too fast to stay up to 'dock' with a tanker?

Great picture of the comet, I remember going up there to see it at the time but not on the night concerned.

I suspect it probably was military aircraft movements but why there, so close to Manchester Airport?

Thanks for the link by the way, I'm supposed to be working!
No idea, but there is quite a bit of military flying in the Peaks.

If you're interested in that incident...don't start reading the link if you're at work - you'll have to read all of it!
read much of it [skimmed the bumf] and it was blatantly a mil a/c breaking mach 1. rest is pure baloney.

i love how much of the proponents of a UFO explanation rely on things like 'no aircraft could fly that low and fast at night' etc. and turning witness accounts of helicopters into ufo's that hovered for 15 minutes.

...but they were, and still are UFO's. Maybe they didn't contain aliens, but they were - apparently - flying objects which, to most people remain unidentified.

You can tell I did not think that one through. Still not convinced it was out of the ordinary.

I was half asking that question. I know swept wings makes for a higher max speed & reduced lift but I don't know how much it affects stalling speed. I'm just assuming it raises it by a imperial (none of that gay metric) Lot.

I'm pretty sure that if the guy had been trained to identify all known military aircraft within one second, and had won many prizes for aircraft i.d. during his time in the observer corps, that he'd be able to tell if it was a swept F-111 or not, especially since there were two other F-111's next to the unidentified aircraft for reference...

From a number of angles the F117 appears triangular, and certainly has an other worldly look about it.

Yeah, but it doesn't look nearly as large as a KC-135 when being refuelled...
