That must've been a fantastic and very interesting project to be involved with. Yes the FRC craft were mighty mighty impressive. Correct me here but I heard they were operated by some ex Special Boat Service chaps. I Recall the first time I saw the Victory in the harbour and thought wow look at the size of that things Monster ships spring to mind. I was even more impressed after the tour. I should say they were excellent cargo delivery vessels once DP was fitted.
I didn't have anything to do with operating them, just designing and building them. I didn't volunteer for the self righting test.

It was a small project compared to what I usually did. Fleet renewal of bp's oil and gas tankers. Here's me at the naming ceremony of the British Diamond on Mokpo South Korea 155,000 m3 Dual Fuel Diesel Electric LNG carrier. I felt that the brass band really missed a trick by not playing Diamonds Are Forever, that would have brought the house down!

Anyone any idea what these might be? Spotted down at Port Solent in November.

I have no idea why the small version appears upside down, if you click through to the full size it's the right way up.

Oh FFS I give up, here's the link - https://thumbsnap.com/oXsmb6D7

That's awesome!

I'm surprised they don't diversify the fleet more for security. That represents more capability than what, all but 3 countries entire armed forces?

could someone render a significant portion of the US war machine unable to operate with something like a dirty bomb?

They currently have 11 carriers with 2 more under construction, but there's never more than 3 in service. The others are in refit, or rest.

The next biggest operator of carriers is...........the UK with 2, with Italy and China.

It was an awesome project. From concept selection - yard selection - detailed design review - construction - site supervision - sea trials and delivery it was 3 years for a fleet of four sister ships. Three were built at Hyundai Heavy Industries yard in Ulsan and one (this one) at Hyundai-Samho Heavy Industries in Mokpo.

They were groundbreaking at the time for being the first LNG carriers that were not steam turbine driven. Normally as the LNG cargo boils off at the top of the tanks it gets sent to the engine room to be burnt in two massive boilers that produce steam to power steam turbines providing main propulsion for the vessel.

These ones used four Wartsilla duel fuel piston engines that were capable of using the boil off gas to generate electricity that was then supplied to two 14MW electric motors through variable frequency drives to a dual input-single output gearbox to the shaft and prop for main propulsion. As an electrical engineer it was an interesting project and represented a step change in efficiency for LNG carriers, it was the template that all LNG carriers now adopt.
