But no, I'm pretty sure that K was a designation denoting 'hydroplane' under the IMYU class structure.

This is Mathea VIII, for example (German, also registered 'K7', but Class D):

.. and no, I don't think the 'D' is for 'Deutschland': you commonly also see it on Italian boats: it seems to denote 800kg class.

* At least since the IMYU/MMA classification came into force: there were several 'unlimited' UK boats before then, including Miss England and Miss England II, and Betty Carstairs' Newg and Estelle IV... an anorak speed record fact is that the engines for John Cobb's Railton Special LSR car came from Carstair's Estelle IV

It was a theory and as it turns out, probably wrong. I love the Maserati badge inside the intake. Somewhat ironic that it was taken from Poseidon. Or maybe that was intentional. smile

Still no sign of the cockpit canopy?

Yup, I would say that’s one of the easiest parts of Bluebird to recreate.

A ‘plug’ with something like 5mm Polycarbonate sheet stretched over it after heat in an oven. Matched up with some Aluminium / stainless mount edge to close it to the hull.

Sounds easy, but it actually is.

It’s a weird one why it’s missing?

The Bute run showed one went missing, and another was soon found.

I’ll get some polycarbonate sheet ordered up from e-bay.

It’s not that hard.

Feature on the local (NE & Cumbria) News tonight that it actually has re-opened and visitors are now welcome to see K7 in the dedicated museum wing.

When the weather warms up a bit, I might have a run across on the super-scoot to see it 'cos the museums in an awful place for parking a car. Lovely little cafe next door, though!

We'll be that way in a month's time and would like to visit the Ruskin Museum. Health problems means O/H can't walk far, is there any parking at all within a hundred yards or so?

I can't see any car parks close by on Google Street View, just on-street parking which I doubt will be plentiful at present.

There was a car park out the back of the museum when we went a few years ago. I think it’s a local council one.

Coniston is so small that virtually any parking will be within 100 yards.

Does O/H have a disability badge? I'd contact the museum directly and ask about parking and access.

Yea the parking’s rubbish unfortunately. If you are lucky you can get on the side of the road the museum is on, no chance at the weekend though as it’s one of the routes up to the Old Man.
The “big” car park is a few hundred m walk away opposite the Crown pub.
I’m going up to the museum tomorrow with son and the father in law.
I have some original photos of some of the runs, my grandparents were watching. I’m moving house soon, I hopefully find them while we are packing up.

The nearest is probably at the Tourist Information Centre. There's another at the top of Station Road somewhere but it would be a bit of a walk from there to the museum.

To give some context, we visited Coniston one wet, cold day last November and tried to stop for coffee; we found one space in the whole village and that was on-street just to the North of the museum. The entire area is permanently full of hikers/walkers.

No blue badge, diagnosis is ongoing. At the moment it largely depends on how she is on the day. Thanks for suggesting contacting the museum, I hadn't thought of that.

I don't want anything to be difficult for her, especially as it's her birthday weekend.

Perhaps the museum have a wheelchair that could be borrowed for use once you've parked wherever?

Worth getting a foldable wheel chair for the whole trip? Could extend how far you walk to restaurants etc in the evenings.

Thanks but she'd kill me if I suggested a wheel chair!

I'll post some piccies of K7 after we get back about this time next month.

Nice drive out today, sun was shining and was busy in Coniston.
Lots of knowledgeable talk in the museum between the visitors, and the lady in the Bluebird Wing, sorry I didn’t get her name.

She said they have the specs of the canopy and they will make one when they have the funds.
All the non-original bits are in green internally to differentiate from the restored parts. There was a little iPad size screen showing photos of the restoration, shame that they are not shown on the bigger screen.

There’s some mention of Bill Smith, but the lady said he is absolutely a major part of the story and will always be thankful.

Fantastic photo’s Mr BMW.

I really need to get up and have a look - soon!

Interesting looking at the Union Jack motif on the fin.

I remember watching footage when Bill Smith first discovered Bluebird underwater and he wiped off the algae from that part. I can only guess he’s preserved this aspect ??

Did anyone else spot that?
