Remind me again what was so wrong with Nimrod it couldnt be fixed?
The MRA4s had a significantly long list of Unsafe points which would have been eyewateringly expensive to fix to a point of safety, whete risks are rendered ALARP ( As Low As Reasonably Possible).I think that it sat somewhere between a Dream, a Wish and a Promise - but left it dangerous and expensive and late.
The way that they were got rid of is more akin to cutting the head off a zombie, to make sure that they do not reanimate at a later date. Please do nt get me wong - an excellent aircraft...but itwas right o euthanise it.
Some interesting ideas over on Pprune also being discussed.

Does that mean all those P-3s were useless?
Sigh.No Eric, it means they had a Tactical Limitation to (try) to overcome, which meant that they were/are less effective than was Nimrod MR2.
There are a whole host of other reasons why P3 and Atlantique were less capable than Nimrod MR2, although in the ASuW role (Anti-Surface Unit Warfare), the P3 was certainly more effective.
