She is four years late and a massive 900 million over-budget. But when the Royal Navy's super-sub HMS Astute finally arrived, she made for an awesome sight.

Astute is the first of four vessels to be built by BAE Systems at a total cost of 3.85 billion, or 960 million each.
Does that mean she was originally meant to cost 60 million? silly

Quite cool that we have one of the best subs in the world, but thats quite a cost!
no. given that one typhoon is around £60m its fair to say a nuclear submarine is a bit more....
its over budget, but not by £900m

The ASTUTE program overall is over budget - I'll assume the papers are at least partially accurate and that figure is £900 million.

Each ASTUTE class boat costs around £1 Billion IIRC, I'll have to check my sources.

That looks / sounds great, surely not something we can actually be proud of (even if it is late and over budget) thumbup

Now we just need some more ships that aren't crap, those aircraft carriers and decent planes and we're good to go!

Come cheer up, my lads, 'tis to glory we steer,
To add something more to this wonderful year,
To honour we call you, as free men not slaves,
For who are so free as the sons of the waves?
Heart of oak are our ships,
Jolly tars are our men,
We always are ready,
Steady, boys, steady,
We'll fight and we'll conquer again and again.

They played that on HMS Victory as she sailed towards the enemy at Trafalgar

No, as you've probably guessed, it means that the whole project went over budget. And it's worth noting that the MoD picked up the bill for around two-thirds of the overspend, which gives you an idea of who was mainly to blame. And it's still cheaper than the US equivalent. If you saw what goes into a nuclear-powered Sub, you'd understand why it costs so much. The only programmes of comparable complexity are things like the Space Shuttle. The likelihood is that there will eventually be 7 boats in the Astute Class. Production of the 4th Boat is already well underway.

Yup.

The Yanks have the nimitz class aircraft carriers over 1000ft long - what do we have the invincible (hardly apt) a mere 690ft and weigh nearly 4x less frown

Come on, let's get some more machinery!

We could rule the world!

Thoughts on what she will actually do?

Can't see her blowing pirates out of the water with multi million pound torpedos!

I guess she could lob cruise missiles at baddie camps, but this didn't seem to do much good in Afghanistan.
