I get more enjoyment from chatting on the trade stands. Even though I'm not usually in the market for a 30 tonne capability launch vehicle or don't intend to purchase the latest in anti-rtank armour piercing shells, I find the traders are happy to chat about their products to everybody who shows an interest.
I enjoyed laughing at the OTT military uniforms of the banana republic generals too. There were a surprising number there.
Yep, loads of them at Duxford when I went.

Most are probably in the Army/Air Force etc but you could tell alot just bought them from the stands.

I'd be mostly interested in seeing the new stuff, Tornados, F22s, Eurofighters, thats my kind of thing.
Tornado? new... confused
Oh no, I don't mean a new Tornado.. Just prefer the Jets to the older planes.

Edit for formatting smile

The ones at Farnborough are real banana repulic generals, not civies dressed in various collections of kit for 'effect' which you get at Duxford.

Duxford can be quite alarming for someone who's not used to that sort of thing (ie random men dressed in Nazi uniforms).

This was the italian Tornado at Farnborough a couple of years ago. (Pictures are a bit naff as taken with a phone)

On trade days you can walk around the planes and even on them, but on public days they keep you at a bit more of a distance.

3x Raptors are booked for RIAT. One display, static and a spare I would imagine. Also a Mig 21 display, FA-18F display and a SU-22 on static. Role demos are also scheduled for 2x Tornado GR4s and one for a pair of Harrier GR9s. Still lots more to come RIAT is looking as if it could be one of the best for a good few years.

Having been to both Fairford and Farnborough, I'd definatly recommend RIAT. I am slightly biased as I've only missed two Air Tattoo's since 1987, but its a more rounded airshow. The displays are more vaired and there are less corporate bits and bobs. Yes, Fairford not as good as 'the good old days' and there are fewer aircraft than before but as someone else pointed out, we live in different times.
Also the F-22 will probably be based at RAF Fairford over the couple of weeks for RIAT/Farnborough this year so there will be more chance of seeing it!
My first ever Airshow was RIAT in 1985 at Greenham Common... I know it was definitely 85, because I turned down tickets to a concert called "Live Aid" (anyone remember that)... possibly the biggest mistake of my life (this far)

The last RIAT held at Greenham was 1983. The 1985 show was at Fairford (the first to be held there).

The Air Tattoo began in 1971 at North Weald. It moved to Greenham Common in 1973 and was held there until 1983. With the arrival of the cruise missiles at Greenham, it was decided that the venue was too politically sensitive.
The first display at Fairford coincided with the weekend of Live Aid. Guess which event I went to smile

1983 was also the year when the Greenham 'Peace Nutters' daubed red paint on a US aircraft. Memory tells me it was a U2 or TR1 but it some sources say it was a SR71.

I work at Farnborough, so i'm biassed. If you want air displays then go to RIAT, if you want more of an aviation/aerospace experience go to Farnborough.

I shall be watching the display from my office, right underneath the crowdline :->. Don't have to pay to get in and get air conditioned travel to/from the trade stands. Score!

where abouts do you work??

Im in the Wavy hanger and always get an amazing view as they display overhead!

the week prior to the show is the best. All the validation flights tend to be a bit more exciting!

Does anybody know where the best place to see a Typhoon perform will be? My mate's dad works at Warton and I nipped over one day when one was due to display but low cloud kyboshed it. I'd like to see a proper display sometime this year.

Farnborough is a week long show, right? How do they organise the flying displays with regards to military vs civil stuff? i.e. Are military displays generally at one end of the week and civil stuff the other, or is there no such segregation? Particularly with RIAT taking place the weekend before F, I'd expect any mil jets to be at F early in the week? Or am I being too logical?

I'm definatly jelous of those working on site. I miss the DERA days when you could sit on the grass outside the firestation, the other side of the runway from the crowd, and get a great view. We also used to sit on the roof of the chemistry lab on the Pyestock "old site" for a good view, as that tended to be right under thier display line. Got a good view straight up the tail pipes of a Mig 29 doing a tail slide.

This is the RAF's offical Typhoon display listing, or it will be when they post the deatils nearer the time, so keep looking here over the next month or so http://www.raf.mod.uk/typhoondisplay/displayprogra...

Most of the main displays will have a Typhoon display, such as Cosford, Waddington, RIAT, Leuchars etc.

I like nipping to Farnborough in my lunch break, I prefer to take photos from under the flight line on Elles Rd roundabout, you get closer to the jet flying display...
