The Virgin set is (or at least was) due to the two Pendolino's coming together at Wembley Sidings, the DVT/MK3/Cl 90 set being used on Euston - Birmingham trains

That was in March 2009 so I guess they are keeping it going as cover/more intensive service.
Still in use... I reckon I see it most weeks (I use the WCML)

Can't directly post pic so it's a link, but it looks really smart.

I imagine that picture is of the set on it's way to Wembley straight from refurb so they tend to use the 57's (or at least used to) for that and then bolt on a 90 for the service trains?

That photographer tends to go for the 'very first seen' type pics.

Well I didn't post this before because...well it's not a great photo. But here's an internal shot from Wednesday.

I've no idea who that man is by the way. But the phone decided to focus on him.

Quite possibly, but I have seen reported elsewhere that it was the one damaged at Wembley in a shunting accident which is now back in service that was being covered. I think they kept the lease to offer a more intensive service.

http://www.railwayscene.co.uk/showthread.php?threa...

and some pictures of the shunting collision;

Which seems to suggest (as regular travelers well know) that the Pendolino's aren't quite the best thing since sliced bread.

Oops! What ever the reason I see the Mk3 train go past my house several times weekly, that's what a real train should look like (if you ignore the loco at the other end biggrin).

Not a train buff but those new PenduLeano things smell like festival toilets and seem very small inside. Hang your jacket up and it's dangling in front of your nose, presumably they are not parallel sided so they they have clearance to lean?

Headphone jack never works, heating is always far too high, never enough seats.
The headphone jacks were disconnected a couple of years ago, indeed the whole onboard entertainment system was removed because people simply weren't using it, preferring ipods and laptops. This does get a mention in the onboard magazine.
There was a stack of 10 Blaupunkt 12CD changers behind the Drivers cab at one end to run it.
Many people complain that 'pendo's are cold, so perhaps the heating has been adjusted to suit?
Seat reservations are free...

Also don't forget we are a Pendolino short, set 33 being damaged beyond repair in the Greyrigg derailment, this and sets starting to go through refurbishment mean the MkIII set is kept busy.
The 'pendo's may seem still new to some, but every one has now done more miles that any steam loco built!

I don't know how you try to glorify it, but lets be frank, Pendos are abysmal.

Talk about cramped inside.
Talk about lack of tables
Talk about crap seats and rotten trays
Talk about the smell of excrement
Talk about far too many FC carriages
Talk about those annoying doors with no sensors in vestibules
Talk about the rancid rancid travelling environment
Talk about lack of seats with windows - don't go on about strength of carriages needed as Europe has proved you can have strong carriages with nice seats that align with windows
Talk about running Voyagers out of Euston that is on a route that is ALL under the wires - Stock shortages are not a valid answer as more should've been ordered (Maybe the DFT's fault?!).

By the way, this isn't a personal dig at you either it's not your fault!

P.S, I assume you are the same 'neilb' as on the WNXX forum?

Yep thats me!

All I can really say about 'pendo's is they are pretty good from where I sit!
Although of course the cramped insides we have to blame George Stephenson for! The high floor dosen't help but all the oily bits have to go somewhere!
Interior doors do have sensors, it would be illegal not too, they don't have a sensitive edge but a load sensor on the motor, having had many a clout off them I agree they are awful!
The window size you can blame Network Rail (or whoever) for. Its was their maximum permitted size for trains that could exceed 125mph. Sadly all the good stuff running around in europe means nothing over here!
Interior (in standard) pretty awful, thankfully I don't go there!

But don't even start me on Voyagers.....!

Less tables. But bigger. In the MK3 set it appears I was on, my laptop basically took up 1/2 a table designed for 4 people. What if 4 people had laptops!
Seats in the Pendo are far far superior to the stuff I was sat on. No support. Springs in uncomfortable places. Backache experienced. Give me the modern seats please!

The rest of what you mention is just not an issue. No window...so what? Smell in the vestibule? Don't sit in the vestibule (and it's better than the entire thing smelling vaguely of piss). Never had a problem with the doors. Just touch the pad and they open.

Plus the new stuff doesn't bounce around like a bouncy castle. They may not be perfect. But they are much better.

Tell you what, you travel on a NXEA train in the height of summer, then tell me the Pendo's are st.

Hell, I'd take a Pendo over any London Midland stock (especially the later green seated Desiros).

Funnily enough mate, not all of us travel with Laptops, so part of my journey is spent looking out of windows, but I'm sure you're an expert in saying I don't need windows.

Don't sit in the vestibule?! I don't bloody do it by choice mate. When you're running 4 car trains on Penzance - Aberdeen they're gonna be wedged (Voyagers this is now, but Pendos have the same problem). It's not even in vestibules either. When they first came out the aircon used to suck the smell in to the coaches.

You must've been on a bad train mate as all the Mk2/Mk3 stock I have been on this year (which is ~20,000miles this year) I have never been on a bad rake, compared with EVERY pendo I have been on in all time has been rancid, same with voyagers.

The problem with doors I was on about was the lack of sensors, on the Mk2/3 stock and the 2nd Gen DMUs, the door had sensors. If they saw someone standing there they wouldn't close. Pendos and Voyagers are different. When people are queueing to get off, the doors in the vestibules will close after a certain time period whether there is someone there or not!

Considering they are 3rd (or is it 5th now?!) gen units, they are frankly, st.

And what's worst of all, you pay over the odds for the fking privilege!!
