Excepting the rather large boat there seems to be surprisingly little damage in that picture- the telegraph pole etc is intact which just seems incongruous.
One thing I noticed watching the coverage of this is that telephone poles and very hardy, most clips shows the water flowing around them, cars/houses/ships bouncing off them etc... okay the wires often got broken and exchanges flooded but telephone poles (it would seem) are rather robost in the face of extreme flooding!

Feel abit sorry for Japan, I see a Volcano has now erupted in the South-West to add insult to injury.

(A colleague of mine somewhat uncharitably speculated that depending on the home port nature might have dealt the Whaling fleet a bigger blow than all the years of protesting, will certainly have knocked the fishing in the North East for a while!)

I just can't comprehend how you clean something like that up. Where does it all go, how do you start again?
They cleared the mess created by 9/11. It will take a lot longer but it can be done.

I am very impressed with the stoical way the Japanese are dealing with this.

We in the West are starting to panic because they are not panicking, and closing down our nuclear power stations even though we are nowhere near an earthquake zone.

To paraphrase one Japanese official, 'After Hiroshima and Nagaski we can cope with anything'.

It is interesting to see how different races/cultures deal with crises.

Asians just get on with it.

Westerners write to their MPs.

Africans wait for somebody to come and help them.

Arabs start shouting and firing AK47s into the air.

I cant see how the insurance companies can pay for all of this, they just wont have enough money for it.
Insurance companies aren't stupid and have unbelievably deep pockets...the Fukushima Power Station was not covered for Earthquake or Tsunami damage for starters.

Obviously the insurance companies most impacted would be the Japanese ones but they swap some of that risk with insurance companies in other parts of the world that also have earthquake risk...say California. In return they buy some of the California risk from the American Insurance companies. It's called the Natural Catastrophe market of "Nat Cat" for short.

From wiki:
Japan
The government of Japan created the "Japanese Earthquake Reinsurance" scheme in 1966, and the scheme has been revised several times since.[1][2] Homeowners may buy earthquake insurance from an insurance company as an optional rider to a fire insurance policy.[3] Insurers enrolled in the JER scheme who have to pay earthquake claims to homeowners share the risk among themselves and also the government, through the JER. The government pays a much larger proportion of the claims if a single earthquake causes aggregate damage of over about 1 trillion yen (about US $8.75 billion). The maximum payout in a single year to all JER insurance claim filers is 4.5 trillion yen (about US $39.4 billion); if claims exceed this amount, then the claims are pro-rated among all claimants.[4]

So looks like a possible $40bn cap?

However never mind that, why don't you go and find out just what the residents of Fukushima Daiichi district are doing to help themselves out, like home made detectors so they can sieve their garden soil.....

That is a different scheme. The Japanese government are using public funds towards the whaling, but it has not come from any donations, as some of your articles state, and and nor did the original letter by Greenpeace et al stated. That didn't stop the hysteria though. The 'confirmation' in one of the stories isn't a confirmation at all.

As for the folks of Fukishima, you come across as though I have slighted them somewhat.
