Awesome biggrin

The best moment i remember was when i was travelling up kirkstone pass out of windermere when the air show was on, and hearing a tremendous rumble. I stopped and got out of the car, to see a vulcan at eye-level, full-power, cruising through the valley of the lake. Simply amazing.
Pah, this one makes you appreciate the sort of power we're talking about-

Had to comment just to say I've had that happen to me on several occasions over the years, in and around Applecross in general as well as when travelling over the Bealach!! Nice to know I'm not the only one beer

Got a joyride In an F3 when I was 15 and in the ATC. Best experience of my life. Those guys have the best job.

P.s OP is clearly a bit of a lady boy.
WOW...a Tornado joyride! I've been an adult instructor in the ATC for 6 years and have never known of a fast jet joyride!! jammy sod, closest thing was a Tucano jolly for best cadet at an annual camp being held at Linton.
I was in the ATC for 6 years in the late 80's and met several "Best Cadets" who had fast jet rides....probably changed now though!!

I know a few who had pax trips in the hawks at Valley on a summer camp.

But tbh, if a cadet got a PAX trip over us engineers that work our guts off for them, then they'd be an uproar! It pees us off alot just seeing the non aircraft trades get PAX trips for one reason or another. Sometimes it used to be, PAX trip would be given to repay a favour, i.e. a med staff would get a PAX as a thanks for doing so many medicals for us, or an MT lad on detachment who sorted out all the mess that was the vehicle hire etc, stuff like that we can live with, as long as they don't forget us too.

Anyone that is sick and misses the bag is made to clean/ scoop it out! There's no way we want to do a flight servicing in a cockpit full of sick!

One of the last ones was a dental nurse if I remember, she screamed so much that the pilot had to turn down the Radio IC Volume knob for most of the flight.

Was in the ATC during the late 70's. I knew a few of the lads, well two, had made it through to fast jets. Lost touch though as you do.
Imagine then my surprise during the first Gulf war, to see the Tornado's on the first raids return, the cockpit lift, and my old mate Mike at the helm!
I could've been me :-) 5F Northampton ;-)

Urban legend from a few years ago: in one of the Gulf countries all the military cars (below staff car level) were white Toyota Corolla 1.3. Legend has a fsat jet pilot (Tornado I think) spotted one of these such cars on a desert road. When he buzzed the car he actually scuffed the belly tank along the roof......

Emphasise that IIRC it was a legend - my perception would be that something that low would be pretty much terminal for either the car or the plane - or both.

I've seen pictures which are supposed to show the car after being hit.

They're over on the Proon. It was an ex-pat in a Jaguar as I recall.

I think the camera man and his chums where rather lucky there! The rate of descent seemed to suggest an undershoot was narrowly averted, bet their ears where ringing for a while!

So it was true? Any links Eric?
I was living out there and the talk in the mess was that the guy concerned had been sent home as he was also involved in a different incident over the jebel. I always doubted it getmecoat

This is the thread you want - there are used to be some better pictures of the car on the thread, but I suspect the links have expired over the years:

I spent 4 years on the Hawks at Valley and it seemed to us ground crew that just about anyone other than ground crew could get a jolly!
Spaceys on annual camp, air traffic, stores, YTS and if you were female you it was almost part of the arrival procedure! We'd ask and be told 'we'll see what we can do' and it would never happen.

When I moved to Tornados it was difficult for us, but not impossible and I fondly remember my couple of hours whizzing around in the back seat twiddling knobs as requested by the driver. biggrin
On TWCU we used to fly a lot of VIP's on friday afternoons, this required the aircraft in question to be washed the previous night. It got to be such a regular thing we had cloth badges made up changeing the proper meaning of TWCU to Tornado Washing and Cleaning Unit!

Our place isn't really the sqn to be on for PAX trips since we don't do loads of CT flying, mainly trial work so it is depressing when the rarity of PAX comes along and its given to a shiney or someone. Ive missed out on my PAX trip and missed out on a Chinook PAX too when they came on exercise at Conz for a few days due to weather frown The guys that did get to go got to blat quite a few rounds out of the door machine guns too! frown
