These SR-71 Blackbirds

When I was in Seattle I visited the Aviation museum, and had a sit in a cockpit of a Blackbird, talk about cramped, got to admire those pilots cooped up in their seat for the entire flight.
Cant imagine the noise of the starting power pack, they used TWO V8's on a trolly unsilenced, must have been something.
If you want a good read about the build etc of the Blackbird, get hold of a book called "Skunk Works" fantastic read.
And there's sled driver a very good book that I may have in ebook form...... Cant imagine the noise of the starting power pack, they used TWO V8's on a trolly unsilenced, must have been something.

I'm pretty sure the story behind that mission is in one of Rich Graham's books.dr_gn said:
How come you have a website offering your Lego models for sale on your profile?
That post was before I edited the previous one.... - I'd delete the second one but now you've quoted it, there doesn't seem much point!OK - you've caught me out on a technicality - when I have excess models - I sell em - You win - I'll just delete all my posts on this thread with pics of Lego models and then you don't have to worry about it any more.

Interesting story. I too wonder why it was so imperative top get the SR-71 down so fast - and at Kadena and nowhere else. Did it have a technical problem or was it carrying photos so important that it was worth the risk of wrecking the aircraft to get the film out and developed as quickly as possible?
Great article!I inferred the latter from the way it was phrased, " Forty-three years later, I still don’t understand why getting that SR-71 inside while a typhoon was bearing down on us was so important. But those decisions were made far above my rank.".

Watch out, the forum police might bust you like they did the Lego dude above
I am not a Lego dude - I AM A REAL PERSON!And I self moderated, thank you very much!
On the subject of the book - I'm sure you can and should buy it here.... http://www.sleddriver.com/
Now THATS advertising! (or discouraging copyright theft depending on which way you look at it)!

O'rlyI met an ex-SR 71 driver one morning watching a bear at our Yosemite National Park campsite. He was a bear of a guy himself so had defo put on a few pounds since retiring.
However, we spent the best part of 2 hours talking SR-71's and the places he'd been, unsuccessfully shot at, etc. But the best put down line of all time on me was when he asked me if i flew (my moment for peer approval and pilot brotherhood):
So i said - yeah a Cessna taildragger;
His response - well, we all have to start somewhere.....
Exit left....

A bit knobbish on his part, ex-SR71 pilot or no.
