They were not universally popular and were often referred to as "clipped, cropped and clapped".

When I was with the Scouts we were walking along a Vally from Bedgellert(sp) and 2 of those boys came flying along below us. Most impressive was watching one of them realise he needed to avoid an errant tree growing out of a corner in the valley
