Eagle was paid off on 26th January 1972, the Belize threat started on January 28th when Ark Royal already in the Atlantic launched a pair of heavily armed peace keeping Buccaneers, flying low level over Belize City.
An interesting question as to whether Eagle's Sea Vixens would have coped with the Guatemalan air force as well as the Ark's Phantoms would.

Given what the Guatemalans had, I suspect they might.
The Guatemalan fear was not what British air power could do to their Air Force, but what it could do to their capital city and infrastructure. And the Belize - Guatemala border is all impenetrable jungle so a few well aimed bombs on key bridges is all that is needed to prevent an invasion.

They had Mustangs of dubious vintage; a pre-emptive strafing of the guatamalan airfields would have been adequate if things had kicked off, if somewhat unpolitic. The performance envelopes would have been just as disparate as F4 versus P51, so keeping it fast and high and attacking in the dive would be the order of the day for the Vixen as much as for the Phantom. Bit of a bore not having a popgun though.

The QE's propulsion motor controls will be a bit whizzbang and therefore prone to going in a huff or switching themselves off to avert smoke escapage until fully tuned; switching it off and back on again is going to be the 'go-to' response.

In theory she could have been made ready if the need was there. Eagle was my father's first ship.

SD.
In your dreams. Eagle was a bag of rust from the mid 70's
So no problem then, as the Belize threat was before the mid 1970s. wink

Edit: for the avoidance of doubt, I have no idea as to the terms of forces' pension schemes form that era, either.
Try's to be "funny", fails miserably.

The report also makes note of the lack of chefs on board and difficulty recruiting them which has obviously caused issues at mealtimes.
Are there no ex special forces experts in weapons, tactics, unarmed combat, explosives and suchlike who also cook ?

About as rare as Baywatch babes and giant cakes on warships.

A report from the local paper states that QNLZ suffered major problems with her propulsion system shortly before the recent flood which left her without drive for 24 hours and is why she was at anchor just off Plymouth for an extended period.

https://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/defence/serious-...

Some of the news report said:
Questioned by The News on June 28 – days before the flood forced the carrier to make an unscheduled return to Portsmouth last week – the navy said it ‘would not discuss the materiel state’ of its vessels nor ‘details of their programmes’.

However, in an admission to The News today, a Royal Navy spokesman confirmed there had been problems.

‘HMS Queen Elizabeth did experience some propulsion issues during her sea training period but rectified them before continuing with her programme at that time,’ the official insisted.

However, Admiral Lord Alan West, a former head of the navy, said he was not worried about the issues.

‘These are just the niggles of a new warship,’ he said. ‘These things happen. It’s all part of the shakedown process.

‘She has not even done a full work up yet. So no, I’m not concerned about this at all.’
The report also makes note of the lack of chefs on board and difficulty recruiting them which has obviously caused issues at mealtimes.
Surprised the headline wasnt 'New carrier sinks on sea trial'

If it came to a shooting war with the Russians or Chinese, with their pesky modern kit, how long do we expect the QE to stay afloat?

I've seen that documentary. One scene had a profound effect on me.

Mock them at your peril, I'd say.

Military Chef courses are THE toughest courses in the military.

Any aircraft carrier of any size or from any nation will only last as long as it takes to get all their aircraft airborne...about 40 minutes

Ryback may have been hot stuff with a knife but we have no evidence of his cooking skills. However, would YOU send something back with a complaint?

As long as you do what he says and get his pies out of the oven before they burn I'd eat it.

Check the opening scene.

Ryback is excused from a ceremonial duty by the CO in order to prepare 50 gallons of the ship's company's favourite bouillabaisse in celebration of the CO's birthday.

Chief Ryback can cook as well as kick terrorist arse !

I saw they turned her around yesterday.Nice to be able to peer at the opposite side with my scope. There is a LOT of kit on deck, probably 30 sea containers, cranes, cherry pickers and what looks like blasting gear. Cut and shut going on?
