These particular carriers, or carriers in general?
These carriers.
Force projection, air support (other ships), amphibious support (we don't have dedicated ships), humanitarian/disaster aid, and general flag waving.

Comes under flag waving, along with selling arms to dubious governments.

I know the decision was made a long time ago, but it still baffles me we have bought the world's most advanced fighter jet and then spec'ed the version with a huge central fan, and all the weight and complexity and cost that brings.

Feels a bit like asking Usain Bolt to run the 100m carrying 2 bags of shopping.
Because the fan system is made by a British company so we get a proportion of the work.

At the time the carriers were spec'd it was thought the technology to provide a suitably powerful catapult on a non nuclear powered carrier. So they were designed without catapults but with provision to fit one at a later date.

As it turned out catapults were feasible after all so the order was changed to F35C, but then the price for fitting catapults turned out to be unacceptably high so the order was changed back to F35B.

Video of the jets taking off.

How fast are they going when they leave the ski jump? On camera, they look slow but obviously that is an optical illusion.
