Merlot of Dale. Technically my fathers but I use it far more than him so let's call it the family boat!

Indeed. "Red Machine" GBR9413 based in Gosport. This one was taken at Ocean Village right after the end of the Solent Spring Double race...
I raced on one a bit, Dick Dastardly III, quite some years ago now, Dick Dastardly I and II met various fates...I recall it being a handicap bandit on a reach, especially if we could fly the kite, but a little off the pace on a beat or downwind.

There she is... Our glorified surfboard...
JOD35?I am happy with my IOR3/4 toner and her 0.961 IRC ticket! She has managed to sneak in ahead of a TP52 on corrected in the past!

I have heard of Dick Dastardly I, II and III. The IRC rating is a killer - 1.021, unfortunately. Downwind or on a reach, we are untouchable. Because of the planing hull, fractional rig, smallish symetrical kyte and wide arse we can sail stupid angles compared to pretty much anything else out there J-109s, Firsts of various iterations, HODs, Primas etc. Upwind, without water ballast the JOD is a really difficult boat to sail to its rating. The "grove" is so narrow, it is unreal. I recall it being a handicap bandit on a reach, especially if we could fly the kite, but a little off the pace on a beat or downwind.
We use it for short handed racing - less people to scream at and only yourself and your partner in crime to blame if you cock up.
All in, very well built boat with amazing performance for the money. It took me 2 yrs to find her...
P.S. Looked a Benny First Class Europe a while back- amazing performance for the £13k asking price, but it was st for short handed racing/cruising due to runners and a very noodly mast. Also get's really killed on its rating...
Here is a shot of a couple of my water toys on the beach on Saturday and one of the van loaded and ready to go, there's quite a few more boards in my lock up as well, a total thirteen at last count.
I've been windsurfing for nearly thirty years but most of the kit was my son's who was a professional windsurfer on the world tour until he died in a jet ski accident 8 years ago last Friday. I still use it a lot and was sailing at Eastbourne on Friday and Saturday with my Son in Law who was also one of his best friends.
Yachting and scuba diving are also passions of mine and my wife's but for them we just charter in the Caribbean or Med and rent diving kit abroad as needed, maybe when I fully retire she'll let me buy a yacht though.

Dick Dasatardly 1 was an Impala 28, fab boats those, DD II was an old Half Tonner that kept falling to bits, DD III was the JOD 35, I think, might have got II and III in the wrong order, I did a bit with them, not a lot, I was doing a lot on a J120 at the time, I don't sail much now as I have the 'rotting mahogany' but I am doing the RTI with some chums on a Nic 55 in a fortnights time.We use it for short handed racing - less people to scream at and only yourself and your partner in crime to blame if you cock up.

Certainly would not want to sail the Europe (or my boat) properly with less than 5 onboard, just too many things to deal with / break happening at the same time on any maneuver! why did i ever buy a boat with Runners!!
an IRC of over 1 is pretty harsh for an older 35 footer though, much get tough competing with the current generation of 40 mods. You done much optimizing to try and creep the handicap down at all?
edit - here is a picture of us before it all goes wrong ...

A fantasy kit set-up for me, I'm guessing you Andy's dad? - (I saw him at the indoor windsurfing in London one year)? I'm sure you're extremely proud of what he achieved in a short time. Just very sad when I heard the news. Good luck with convincing the other half on the yacht purchase.

There is not a lot you can do - the mast is heavier, the N1 is not being used and that is about it - rating is down from 1.033. The biggest problem is the narrow grove going upwind. With a well drilled full crew and a mains/helm working well as a pair, the JOD is still competitive. Getting the crew to commit and finding someone who actually knows how to steer her is a problem.
During last years' 2-handed RTI we flew the kyte in 35knots, tanking along at a steady average 15knts round the back of the island, hitting 18knts surfing. She was super stable and we were actually enjoying it instead of the usual heart in mouth feeling. Thus she still has it to mix with the big boys, but it's finding the crew...
