Why would a normal sounding plane not show on FR or ADSB Exchange? Was watching the telly earlier and I heard a plane above the sound of the telly. I muted it, it sounded low, to my amateur ear I reckon a single engine prop. Sounded fairly fast.

Looked on both and nothing showed at all. Just a glitch, or something nefarious?
I was under the impression that not all GA stuff carries the transponders, etc, needed to show up. Especially the smaller, or older aircraft. Happy to be corrected on this, but quite a lot of small stuff doesn't seem to show up on the FR site, etc, in my experience.

I had a chinook with the call sign Metal1 fly slightly south of me earlier over the Chilterns, the distinctive dakka dakka made me go outside to have a listen!

Yep, I can't recall the specifics offhand, but there are specific criteria for when a transponder is mandatory, based around weight therefore size of aircraft, the airspace it's flying in, & the rules its flying under. It might be a good idea, but it's not necessarily always essential.

The Herc is a HC-130J Combat King II version, hence the King callsign, officially for SAR, or Personnel Recovery as the USAF like to call it. It can in-flight refuel helicopters/V-22's, and very is similar to the MC-130J's that run out of Mildenhall, both are designed to sneak around behind enemy lines, but the MC-130's are for Special Operations missions.

Exactly that. Whenever the single engined aircraft are transiting long distances over water the C-130 will follow behind with life rafts ready to push out of an aircraft ditch. They contact each country that they are transiting prior to the flight so that if required a helicopter can then rescue the crew that the C-130 is providing top cover for.

They used to have a whole RAF Royal Flight Squadron years ago......so, no need to get so outraged.

New member here. As well as an interest in cars, I have always found aircraft to be fascinating. Over the past year, I have been using several flight tracking sites, they all have their advantages. I am amazed that they are free. I was also surprised at the military aircraft which can be seen - U2's over Northern California, Global Hawk drones over the Black Sea and over the past couple of weeks, B52's from Minot AFB or Barksdale AFB.
These are the sites which I mainly use.
