That's amazing (and rather worrying...)

How did the Crusader fare in combat?
It was highly regarded by those who flew it. The US Navy were less keen on it because of its single engine - which is why the Phantom was preferred. It was also planned that the Crusader would be the last gun equipped fighter with the US Navy. As it turned, that wasn't actually what happened.
According to wiki it was a 'difficult' aircraft and of a total of 1,261 Crusaders built, by the time it was withdrawn from the fleet, 1,106 had been involved in mishaps.

[oops -see that has already been quoted above]

Define "mishap"?

All I've ever read states the pilots who flew it loved it - and regretted having to switch to the heavier and gunless Phantom.

You've got to put all that into the context of the era in which it was designed -and the aircraft it replaced.

There used to be an ejector seat trainer at Farnborough. Would sit in the technical college across the road and watch them whilst I should have been studying engineering matters.

Naaa, just put lead shot in the nose and secure with plasticine, model makers have been sorting that problem for years

I was asked to scan an old family album for a friend and there were a bunch of Zep photos in it. I thought it might be interesting to share this one. Does anyone know what the liquid release on the left might be?

It's most likely water ballast - although those guys on the left seem to be legging it quite quickly.

Do you know where the photo was taken?
