I thought the trailing diesel was there as a backup in case the steamer gets into difficulty, so as to not leave it stranded blocking a main line. I don't know whether they do anything if the steam loco is working normally, though.
I think it supplies power for the train heating.rs1952 said:
3. It is booked an 18-minute stop at Newbury Racecourse station. This station has no regular service, only a few occasional specials on race days. It is also booked to stop there for 18 minutes.
If you call an hourly service each way, every day, not a "regular service" then I guess that is accurate....;-)

Not a line I use very much, and I see that my info was sadly out of date:

The Great Western Railway opened the station on 26 September 1905, several decades after the rest of the stations on this part of the line. It was used for race specials only. It did not even appear on timetables until 1912 but even then, it was still used only for race traffic.
In 1990, after the building of new facilities at the racecourse and the building of a new industrial estate on Hambridge Road, a regular stopping service was introduced for the station.

Back to the routing of this loco and train. I understand from our local paper that she will be passing through Maidenhead next weekend heading the Cathedral's Express, from Paddington to Salisbury via Reading. I had a look on the web site mentioned previously but despite using the search facility I couldn't find anything. Anyone any ideas?

I'll try to keep away. It's bad enough being a vintage car geek and a football anorak so I try to keep just a mild interest in steam engines and railways. That said I couldn't miss the chance to drive a GWR 2-8-0 on the West Somerset Railway back end of last year Anyone wanting to see it on the journey from York later today, here is the schedule:

Over on http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?p=25685... (yes I did go there for a look ) someone is saying that Flying Scotsman was still in York this morning and not in steam. If so it would seem unlikely to get down to Southall and into Paddington by early tomorrow morning.Actually on that subject, I passed Southall sheds today and 34052 Southern Region Battle of Britain class was there looking ready for action. Perhaps it's on standby to substitute for Flying Scotsman?

I saw 34052 in Wembley Yard last week while I was running onto the Down Willesden Relief with 6Z77, looked very smart - I think it's 34046 in temporary disguise.
There's a (poor quality) photo of the real one at Eastleigh on 14th January 1967 on my Flickr feed:

Being of a certain age the Merchant Navys and West Country pacifics were the last steam express locos I saw as a kid, we used to go up to Waterloo and bunk into Nine Elms for a look round. That said the copper and brass of a Castle or King steaming through Ealing Broadway made the most impression on me as a small boy.
