This is inside the turret during loading and firing.

That's one of the Iowa Class so 16" guns
The Youtube title even says it the Mighty Mo as well laugh

The Texas wouldn't have been anything like as advanced in the loading being WW1 era.

Talking of turrets, the guys on USS Iowa have recently got one of theirs to move.

There are other videos on their channel showing inside, different camera angles, etc.

It would have interesting to actually hear the electrics motors that turn the turret and the resulting mechanical noises as it is one of those things that you assume sound a certain way (from movies and games) but actually might be quite different in reality.
Unfortunately though someone seems to have arranged a full band rehearsal (just out of camera shot) so you can't hear a bloody thing above the music! wink

I hope we get hear it in their next video's

Here's one without the music

The background noise is the container ship loading adjacent to their mooring. Apparently you couldn't hear anything on deck in regard to the turret noises.

However, inside on the electric deck it's another story!

It's pretty awesome!

That's the problem with videos. You miss the bass and reverberation.

This is a broadside and near to what it sounded like.

https://youtu.be/ITUlTUNdJOU

I was a Phalanx CIWS operator/maintainer and even that sounds very muted in video. It's a much louder and deeper sound in real life, and the deck shakes with the recoil.

Edited to add...

Of course on a video you also miss the physical aspects of being near 9 16 inch guns going off together!

Being up close to large explosions like big cannons/howitzers firing, bombs going off etc, the sound is nothing like “in the movies”, which are big rumbling “booms”.

Up close, the sound is a super loud “crack” that you very much feel as the pressure wave hits you, then you might get some lower toned reverb depending on the environment.

A CWIS sounds like a really loud and long burp. Buuuuuurp. The closest sound in the civilian world you’d find would be a top fuel dragster. Those are incredibly loud, so much so your vision blurs as your eyeballs are vibrating. Very spectacular experience that will shock you the first time.

A top fuel dragster is a good analogy.

We tended to shoot in 1 second bursts so didn't get the long burp you hear from an A10. They are certainly loud and violent though.

During a shoot one of my tasks was to remove a physical safety lock just before it's fired, then get inside the ship.

One time I got to the door and some idiot had secured it from the other side. I couldn't risk comms as that would mean taking my ear defenders off, so I just took cover behind the mount and waited for the violence smile

I used to drink with an old boy that went in on D-Day, the big shells being fired almost horizontally 'sounded like a fking express train' as they went overhead.

I'd concur with that description plus the movement of our ship from the shock wave as the rounds went overhead of us, we were providing air defence cover for Missouri and Wisconsin during Gulf War 1 while they were bombarding Kuwait.

They were pretty impressive to watch "in action" as we weren't sat very far away, bit of history I guess too watching a Battleship in action for real for the last time ever. Still remember it very vividly despite being 33 years ago.

He did say that the landing craft were pushed down into the water by the pressure wave and pulled back up by the vacuum after the shells had passed.

As Texas prepares to be refloated, it's been announced that USS New Jersey will be heading into dry dock on the 21st March.

Edited to add:

Moving from her berth to the shipyard on the 21st then probably going into the dry dock on the 27th.
