when Clarkson drove the range Rover against the Challenger he showed us the rifled barrel. You know what they say...

You can question many things in life: the internet, tax returns, death...

... BUT NOT TOP GEAR
Well I say Top Gear is ste:

"Another improvement currently being made to the Challenger 2 is the replacement of its 120 mm rifled cannon barrel with a smooth bore cannon, which will enable the Challenger to fire depleted uranium rounds among other more lethal ammunition developed by the US and Germany"

My uncle knows a guy who tested the Challenger 2. It was unique because the barrel was smooth if I can remember.
confused Challenger 2 has a 120mm rifled main weapon, the M1 has a 120mm smoothbore, IIRC?

My uncle knows a guy whose dog used to st on the front garden of the ex-wife of a fella who cleaned the toilets in the factory where they make the guns.....

Or something.
That doesn't mean a specific Challenger 2 couldn't have been fitted with a smooth bore gun at some point does it?

Indeed not, but that's not how the first line of Tomlev40's post reads (see above).

However if it was a single Challenger that happened to be fitted with a smoothbore, then the rest of the post would make some sense, if not the first line.

fked if I know TBH.

On the subject of Top Gear, Clarkson wasn't the first to test a car against a tank....

I have a confession, Back in '92 when I was a young lad in the Tank Regiment driving Challenger 1, I did this boxedin

Just going to dam fast in what should have been a 3rd gear corner, I hit it flat out in 4th, got the back out nicely with a bit of oppisite lock stick but it got away from me & we hit a 4 inch kerb side on & over she went.

The operator was flung out the turret, had it gone over further then he would have had it, the commander wedged himself in.

When I was up in front of the CO I remember him saying 'you were lucky, Tanks dont care who they kill, good guys or bad guys'. We were all fine but I had to 'donate' a weeks wage to the recovery fund biggrin

The Churchill Tank. Fitted with a 2 pounder then upgraded to a 3 inch howitzer and then again to a 6 pounder which once took out a Tiger in North Africa. You'd of thought the gun upgrades would stop but then another upgrade to a 75mm gun this time! Also fitted with a lot of armor.

<story about getting it a tad wrong>
For some reason that dragged up amemory of a lad I knew from scouts.

He joined the army. Came home one christmas with a chocking great scar on his forehead, and some story about falling over in a tank or some such.

Turns out he was on a horse that bolted and he smacked his head on a tree branch the horse ran underhehe

So what makes it the best tank in the world? How is it better than say the Abrams or the New leopard posted earlier?

M1 Abrams & Leopard use the same German made smooth bore gun.
Challenger 2's gun uses a rifled barrel.

Smooth bore = Musket used by cannon fodder.
Rifled barrel = Sharpe's chosen men's Baker rifles.

We all know the rifles were more accurate and fire further wink

Isn't the smooth bore used for sabot rounds though? (See post at top of page 4)

Having asked the question, I googled my question. There are pages of debate here: http://www.worldaffairsboard.com/land-forces/10900...

In essence the arguments are:

  • Gun Smooth vs Rifled - Smooth bore is a more modern design, able to fire more modern rounds. Rifled more accurate Chally 2 holds record for ranged kill at just over 5km and can also be used to fire broader range of ammo.
  • Powerpacks - M1A2 much faster and better P2W thab Chally. Chally more reliable, and easier to work on, and better range.
  • Armour / crew survivability Chally has better armour, but doesn't have blow off doors on its magazine like the M1A2. Chally has a built in Kettle thumbup M1A2 side armour much weaker.
  • Electronics M1A2 seems to win here as it's battlespace networked so can pass on target info to other platforms. Also has better whole crew targetting and vision systems.
There are about 20 pages of stuff in the link - interesting debate.
