A compulsory purchase will not help XH558 though
It will, *IF* the council see '558 as an attraction. That maybe why they holding back to starting to take it apart, waiting to see what the legal outcome is.
However, they will have to bite the bullet in the new year at some point, in case Peel win, or the CP never happens and they leave it too late to do it in time.

13 years later and AFAIK, no full size jet airliner/freighter has ever operated from there. It’s still just General Aviation light aircraft and the odd King Air or similar.
Why did they think that would happen - the runway approved was/is nowhere near long or wide enough for commercial jets.

Also I seem to recall the runway was granted planning consent and then a challenge to the consent was launched although I don’t recall the details.

flights were more expensive than from LBA, that means carriers were paying more to land/take off as its closer to europe and should therefore be cheaper all else being equal.

doncaster itself isnt big enough to sustain the airport, it needs the populations of sheffield/barnsley/rotherham to use it. If the flights from Leeds are cheaper and there is only 30 minutes difference in getting there you can see why people would opt for LBA over DSA for the same destination.

There is opportunity to make Doncaster the Stansted of the north if the budget carriers can be tempted away from Leeds/Bradford.
And why should Leeds/Bradford suffer?

Which proves the point that there is just too much capacity in that area.

Its why Southend has similar PAX viability issues, with its proximity to Stanstead.

Yup, take the south yorkshire travellers away and you may find LBA is no longer viable

From my door:
Doncaster Sheffield: 45 minutes
Leeds Bradford: 50 minutes
Manchester: 1 hour 10 minutes
East midlands: 1 hour 5 minutes

that's 4 airports in around an hour of me, so like everybody else I go wherever the flights are cheapest. 15 minutes difference is nothing.

That’s only the same as down South though… I’m based in Farnborough, and ignoring our own airport as that’s mainly private flights, we have

Heathrow - 30 mins
Gatwick - 45 mins
Southampton - 60 mins
Luton - 90 mins
Bournemouth - 85 mins

Has anyone heard that the a purpose built hanger for XH558 is to be built on the Rother Valley Gulliver’s site. A senior employee there told me but can find no supporting evidence.

Sound travelled to my house about 6 miles away as the crow flies.
Brought back memories of when they used to take off six at a time smile

I also heard it was heading somewhere near Swallownest, so that would concur with what you've been told. Still could be a rumour though, these things get started way too easy.

It's also a bit of a ballache to get to from South Yorkshire.

It's nowhere near a major road.
